1st Greek Breeding Bird Atlas EBBA2 - European Breeding Bird Atlas 1st Greek Breeding Birds Atlas (GBBA1) European Breeding Bird Atlas 2 (ΕΒΒΑ2) Since 2015, the Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS) has launched the first Greek Breeding Bird Atlas (GBBA1), a very ambitious first attempt to map the distribution of breeding bird species over the whole of the country! This project comprises the most important conservation project for avifauna in Greece over the last decades. For its implementation, the GBBA1 needs the collective participation of Greek and foreign birdwatchers and ornithologists. The project will cover the period 2010-2020 and comprises part of the larger and very ambitious European Breeding Bird Atlas 2 (EBBA2) project, led by the European Bird Census Council (EBCC), in collaboration with partners from all over Europe. The EBBA2 will run from 2013-2017 and plans to produce a new atlas for breeding birds in Europe, to update the ground-breaking first atlas, whose is now 30 years old. Study area and time period GBBA1: The area covers the whole of the country, mainland and insular area, while bird counts can be implemented from the beginning of April till the end of June every year. The GBBA1 is planned to include records up to 2020 and will included data from the decade 2010-2020. EBBA2: The project will last 5 years, from 2013 till 2017, covering 51 countries and almost 11 million km2. Methodology The Hellenic Ornithological Society has adapted the EBBA2 methodology for the needs of the GBBA1 project, thus the methodology is common for both projects. The coordination, collection and analysis of data as well as provision of data to the ΕΒΒΑ2 Atlas Steering Committee is undertaken by the Conservation Department of HOS. The results will be presented on maps of 50x50 and 10x10km. Grids and coverage of squares All grids are available in the form of shapefile and kml files in the Dropbox ΕΒΒΑ2_Greece. See the coverage of squares with standardized methods here. GBBA1: data will be collected using the National Grid (EGSA87) in 2x2 and 10x10km squares. Overall there are 2.068 squares of 10x10km. In order to consider a 10x10km square ‘covered’, one must collect data from at least two 2x2km squares within it. EBBA2: data will be collected using the European Grid UTM 50x50km. There are 155 such squares in Greece. In order to consider a 50x50km square ‘covered’, one must collect data from at least two 10x10km squares within it, thus up to 2017 we must cover approximately 300 squares of 10x10km. Hellenic Ornithological Society European Bird Census Council 1st Greek Breeding Bird Atlas EBBA2 - European Breeding Bird Atlas Participation in the GBBA1 / EBBA2 All information on breeding birds species is important and may be used! All raw data which you have may contribute to our efforts, whether these are from systematic or non-systematic methods. Should you wish to participate in the GBBA1 & ΕΒΒΑ2 projects Communicate with HOS on [email protected] Choose the 10x10 square(s) you would like to cover Register to the project Read the extended methodology and have a look at the datasheets which have been prepared for Greece You may contribute data with any of the following methods: 1. Implement Timed-Effort Visits in at least two 2x2km squares within the 10x10km square you have selected. Select two 2x2km squares with different habitats and realistic accessibility (the 2x2km squares kml file can be found in the Dropbox ΕΒΒΑ2_Greece). o Timed-effort Visits are very flexible walked routes during which only time is controlled (there is no special requirement regarding the area covered, the speed, etc.) but the will have to be carried out during the same day, during morning (6:00 - 9:00) or afternoon (17:00-19:00) hours. o Each visit must last a minimum of 1.5 hours of effective surveying i.e. actual time during which the observer searches for birds, and does not include the time spent travelling between sites in the 2x2km square. o The observations may be performed from points (point counts) or in transects or any other systematic methodology. During the visit the observer will have to try to visit as many habitats as possible within the 2x2km square. o All birds are recorded, i.e. complete lists are made. Ideally, records must be performed when all breeding species (resident species and summer visitors) are present in the specific area. o Fill in the Timed Effort Data Input Form 2. Participate in other Bird Monitoring Programmes of HOS The Hellenic Common Bird Monitoring Scheme (HCBM) The Important Bird Area Caretakers Programme 3. Casual Records may be submitted either for a 50x50km square or a 10x10km square. Please submit your Casual Records either through on-line platforms (such as Ornithotopos - BirdTrack, Ornitho, Observation, etc.) or fill-in one of the following Casual Records Data Input Files for 50x50 or 10x10km squares. Hellenic Ornithological Society European Bird Census Council 1st Greek Breeding Bird Atlas EBBA2 - European Breeding Bird Atlas Recorded Data For each square (50x50, 10x10 or 2x2 km), the following parameters should be at least collected: Each square has its own unique code (e.g. 17/435, 34UFE3) and it is important to use this coding in order to be able to analyze data Code of square efficiently. Find your squares code here. From the list of species of the EBBA2 project. You can find these Species also in all datasheets. Selection of 16 categories which describe whether the species breeding is Possible, Probable or Confirmed in each square. You Breeding Category can find these also in all datasheets. Record the number of individuals of each species or select from 6 categories of abundance which describe the estimate of breeding Abundance pairs present. You can find these also in all datasheets.
