Blood
Components and
Types
Blood
• Blood is a connective tissue
• Consists of plasma, red blood cells, platelets, and white
blood cells.
Plasma
• Plasma is the fluid part of the blood.
• Water, minerals, nutrients, sugars, and
other things
Red Blood Cells (RBC’s)
• Take oxygen to every cell in the
body
• Contains Hemoglobin
• Oxygen-carrying protein
Platelets
• Platelets are fragments of larger cells found in the bone
marrow.
• Platelets last 5-10 days
• Platelets help stop bleeding by clumping together at the
site of a wound.
White Blood Cells... WBC’s
Most are made in the bone marrow and some in
the lymphatic system
White blood cells are a line of defense. They
destroy pathogens.
A pathogen is an infectious agent, or more commonly germ, such as
a virus, bacteria, or fungus that causes disease to its host.
Body Temperature Regulation
• When your body temperature goes up, blood vessels
• Heat can be transferred to your skin and evaporates.
This cools you down!
Blood Pressure
• Blood pressure is the force
exerted by blood on the walls of arteries.
(Why not veins?)
• Veins are returning blood to the heart. The pressure is
not near as great.
What are the Two numbers in BP?
• BP is usually given in two numbers. EX: 110/70mmHg
• Systolic: Is the pressure exerted in large arteries when
the ventricle contracts.
• Diastolic: Is the pressure exerted on the arteries when
the ventricle is relaxed.
Blood Types
Blood Types
• Your blood type is established before you are
BORN, by specific GENES inherited from your
parents.
• These two genes - one gene from your
MOTHER and one from your FATHER determine your blood type by causing proteins
called ANTIGENS to exist on the surface of all of
your red blood cells.
Blood Simulations
1. Ed Puzzle –Click on the Link
• Fill in the worksheet and answer the questions while
watching the video.
2. Blood typing simulation  Click on the Link
• Determine the blood type of each patient and answer the
questions
• Use the chart to help determine the blood type
• The following slide will guide you to determine blood
type
Determining Blood types
A
Rh
B
What is this person’s
blood type?
Answer: A+
• Anti-A Serum is not clumping
• Anti-B Serum is considered to be
clumping
• Clumping= positive reaction
• That surface protein is present
• This Blood type would be “B”
