A Guide for GP Trainees Attending Maternity Services Taster Days In the context of rising attendances in the DAU for pregnancy related issues which could more appropriately be treated in Primary care, this education has been developed to support agreed pathways. We aim to enable women to have access to the most appropriate care delivered by the most appropriate person from the outset. The Opportunity We are piloting an opportunity for GP ST1-2 trainees who have not undertaken an attachment in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to attend taster days in Maternity services. These will comprise: 1. Pre-course preparation in the form of suggested reading 2. Attending an Obstetric Day Unit for a half-day practical experience 3. An associated e-learning package The aim is to improve the knowledge and skills of doctors in primary care in the current management of common issues and complications experienced by pregnant women in the second and third trimester. We would ask that you contact Health Education Wessex in order to co-ordinate the aforementioned sessions. You will have the opportunity to: 1. Improve your ability to undertake pregnancy risk assessment 2. Understand referral criteria for antenatal clinics / admissions 3. Improve your ability to diagnose, investigate and initiate management of common conditions in pregnancy The Role of Maternity Day Unit Staff 1. Demonstrate usual care and assessment of women attending the Obstetric Day Assessment Unit 2. Explain referral criteria 3. Discuss women seen routinely on the DAU as well as those seen for acute admissions 4. Supervise appropriate examinations 5. Discuss investigations and interpreting results Suggested Reading 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the common women’s health problems who present to the DAU 2. Recognise common signs and symptoms and know how to manage common women’s health problems in pregnancy which present via a DAU 3. Recognise common signs and symptoms and know how to manage common women’s health problems in pregnancy which are more appropriately managed in primary care 4. Demonstrate an understanding of when referral to the DAU is indicated 5. Demonstrate skills in examination of the pregnant woman 6. Communicate sensitively with women and understand the importance of promoting health and a healthy lifestyle as an integral part of their visit 7. Understand the role of the midwife in the patient pathway
