JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title:
Registered General Nurse
Reports to:
Clinical Manager
Accountable to:
Registered Manager
Hours:
6 Hour day Negotiated Rota
JOB PURPOSE:
The post holder will work to assist with the continuity of physical care for Residents during their
time at Avondale. The post holder will work significantly within the home but be expected to be
flexible in terms of delivering care or accompanying residents within a variety of environments.
Clinical practice
 Assess, plan, develop, implement and evaluate programmes and care plans to promote
health and well-being
 Implement and evaluate individual treatment plans for patients with long-term conditions
 Support residents to adopt health promotion strategies that encourage residents to live
healthily, and apply principles of self-care
 Support and advise residents requesting information relating to family planning needs
 Run a GP clinic every 2/52 in the Home for the visiting GP
 Work collaboratively with the RMN Key Worker to provide support for residents
holistically, meeting their social, mental and physical health needs
 Advising residents on matters relating to Wellbeing, Healthy Eating, Exercise and
Lifestyle Choices
 Refer residents when required to outside agencies and services
 Supervise HCA’s and teach skills to enable them to accurately perform routine
observations and monitoring of physical health symptoms.
 Collecting samples for testing and investigations.
Communication
 Ensuring accurate records are kept and information is passed on to relevant staff and
outside agencies
 Handover to all staff specific instructions and advice concerning residents they are
caring for
 Utilise and demonstrate sensitive communication styles, to ensure residents are fully
informed and consent to treatment
 Communicate effectively with residents and carers, recognising the need for alternative
methods of communication to overcome different levels of understanding and preferred
ways of communicating
 Utilise communication skills to support residents to adhere to prescribed treatment
regimens
 Anticipate barriers to communication and take action to improve communication

Delivering a quality service
 Recognise and work within own competence and professional code of conduct as
regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
 Produce accurate, contemporaneous and complete records of patient consultation,
consistent with legislation, policies and procedures
 Prioritise, organise and manage own workload in a manner that maintains and
promotes quality
 Deliver care according to the NSF and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence
(NICE) guidelines and evidence-based care
 Evaluate the residents’ response to health care provision and the effectiveness of care
 Participate in the performance monitoring review of the team, providing feedback as
appropriate
Team working
 Understand own role and scope at Avondale and identify how this may develop over
time
 Work as an effective and responsible team member, supporting others and exploring
the mechanisms to develop new ways of working
 Delegate clearly and appropriately, adopting the principles of safe practice and
assessment of competence of those taking on delegated duties
 Accept delegation from other nurses, prioritise own workload and ensure effective timemanagement strategies are embedded in own practice
Management of risk
 Manage and assess risk within the areas of responsibility, ensuring adequate measures
are in place to protect staff and residents
 Monitor work areas and practices to ensure they are safe and free from hazards and
conform to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines
 Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of medications is undertaken. And oversee
the monitoring, stock control and documentation of controlled drug usage according to
legal requirements
 Undertake mandatory and statutory training
 Apply infection control measures within Avondale according to local and national
guidelines
Utilising information
 Collate, analyse and present clinical data and information to the team
Learning and development
 Act as mentor to students, assessing competence against set standards as requested
and if appropriately qualified
 Assess own learning needs and undertake learning as appropriate
 Make effective use of learning opportunities within and outside Avondale, evaluating
their effectiveness and feeding back relevant information

STANDARD REQUIREMENTS

Confidentiality: The post holder must maintain the confidentiality of information about
residents, staff and other Delphside business in accordance with policies, professional
codes of conduct and relevant legislation such as the Data Protection Act.


Infection Prevention and Control: Employees must be aware of their responsibilities to
protect residents, visitors and employees against the risks of acquiring health care
associated infections, in accordance with policy

Professional standards and performance review: Maintain consistent high
professional standards and act in accordance with the relevant code of professional
conduct (if applicable). Employees are expected to participate in the performance review
process.

Standards: Support the development of performance standards within Avondale to
ensure the service is responsive to and meeting the needs of its residents

Finance: All staff will comply with financial processes and procedures.

Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Employees must be aware of the
responsibilities placed on them Safeguarding policies & procedures.
SUMMARY
This job Description is an outline of the key tasks and responsibilities of the post and
