CAUSES OF REJECTION
Specimens not accompanied by test request and not
properly labeled and with deficient clinical
information. Clotted specimen, hemolyzed blood,
diluted blood, less than minimum volume, received
>24hrs after collection
COLLECTION AND TRANSPORT
Collect blood by venipuncture. If through available lines,
discard first 5 ml. Use correct tube. Label & indicate date
/ time of collection. Maintain transport temperature at 18
28 °C. Transport to the laboratory as soon as possible.
SPECIMEN STABILITY AND STORAGE
Ambient temperature: 24 hours
Refrigerated / frozen: unacceptable
REFERENCE
Normocytic, normochromic RBCs; mature white blood
cell population; adequate platelets
LIMITATIONS
When whole blood is collected by fingerprick and
smeared, distribution of platelets are affected by
clumping. Differential count may be slightly variable
compared to venipuncture specimen.
METHODOLOGY
Manual processing and review by microscopy.
