Polymer Chains in Plastics
 Plastics are synthetic materials derived from organic (carboncontaining) compounds. The most common sources for carbon
compounds are oil (petroleum) and natural gas.
• Plastics consist of polymers - long molecule chains - often
mixed with other substances such as coloring agents and
softeners.
 • The properties of a particular plastic depend on what the
polymer chains look like, how they are bonded to each
other, and which additives have been introduced.
• There are two groups of plastics:
Thermoplastics, which melt when heated and can be
remolded easily.
Thermosets, which can't melt or be remolded. They crack
or char when heated.
Polyethylene (abbreviated PE) or
polythene (IUPAC name polyethene or
poly(methylene)) is the most common
plastic. The annual production is
approximately 80 million metric tons. Its
primary use is in packaging (plastic bag,
plastic films, geomembranes, containers
including bottles, etc.).

Chemical Sensors
Chemical sensors can be used
to detect trace chemicals in the
polymer and use concentrations
of those chemicals to determine
the path to take to reach the
unwanted component. This
would require several sensors
so as to be able to establish a
chemical gradient, and would
require a certain degree of
physical separation between
sensors.

While this is not a strict
requirement, the alternative
would be to try every path,
and retrace a path when the
chemicals diminish. While it
is not difficult to create a
solid state sensor for a
given chemical, the
difficulty increases when the
number of chemicals that
must be analyzed increases.

We would probably need a
series of nanobots, one for
each chemical, or at least a
set of replaceable sensor
modules. The nanobots life
span is determined by the
volume of decomposition.
Assembler Nanorobots
Specialized nanorobots known as assembler
nanobots will be required to create more sophisticated
units. Theoretically, the assemblers would use the
bottom up approach and stack atoms upon each other
in layers to form the desired nanomachine.
Another requirement of a useful
nanomachine is that it operates
independently. Physical, electrical,
and chemical reactions can produce
a response but the introduction of
these stimuli rob the device of the
advantage of independent operation
and they also can produce a
response in the nanobot’s
surrounding environment.

The Assembler Process:
The Assembler Plant is
the location where the
construction of our
nanobots will begin,
using the bottom up
process. Here the
nanobot is encoded with
its first set of
commands.

The nanobot travels through the
Assembler to an encoding processor.
This is the assembler that will add the
coding that will determine the
molecular structure that can be
attacked. This is also the location
where color coding will be added to
allow for distinction of their primary
function.
