Swine Influenza -respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus People do not normally get swine flu This outbreak appears to be originating in Mexico. How does swine flu spread? Person to Person Sneezing/coughing Person to Object Contact with an infected object How does Swine Flu affect you? What are the signs and symptoms of swine flu in people? - Symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of regular human flu and include: Fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills, fatigue Diarrhea, vomiting Severe illness such as pneumonia and respiratory failure A worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions Are there medicines to treat swine flu? YES. - The use of prescription medicines fights against the flu virus by keeping the virus from reproducing in your body. The CDC recommends using oseltamivir or zanamivir. Why Does the Flu Happen Every Year? There are 3 types of flu… A, B, and C. Type A changes every year, which is why you can never be immune to the flu. It usually occurs frequently in winter & early spring. Because the flu changes, or mutates, when new strains occur, it can cause an epidemic or pandemic. Epidemic - affecting or tending to affect a VERY large number of individuals within a population, community, or region at the same time. Pandemic - occurring over a wide geographic area and affecting an exceptionally high proportion of the population Mutation – a significant change in the coding of an organism.
