Title: Education Outreach Director, Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue (SCWR)
Reports to: Executive Director, Animal Care Director
Education: AA or AS degree, preferably in communications, environmental
education, wildlife science, biology, or a related field
Professional Requirements:
 Excellent communication skills
 Professional appearance and demeanor
 Experience in effective and articulate public speaking
 Advanced interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with a diverse population of people
 College level writing, grammar and spelling skills
 Diverse media application skills
 Experience using the internet and social networking tools for education and
outreach
 Basic website design skills desirable
 Skills in the following areas: Microsoft 2010 Office Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher
and graphic design
 Strong interest in wildlife and the environment
 Personal advocacy of the organization’s Mission Statement
 Self-starter with good time management skills and multitasking abilities
 The ability to identify, develop, and implement new programs
Job Description: To support and develop SCWR’s animal care and education programs: Animal
Care and Rescue Teams, SCWR Education Program, A Wildlife Exclusion Service (AWES), Barn
Owl Maintenance Program (BOMP), and the Predator Prevention and Education Barnyard
(PEEP)
Administration Duties
 Create and submit monthly reports that show community participation and financial
income and expenses of all educational programs
 Develop and recommend budgets for education programs
 Invoice and payment tracking of programs
 Oversee all staff, volunteer and intern educational needs including the development of
training programs for the organization’s animal care and education programs
 Track the success of training efforts and make future recommendations to enhance
existing volunteer and staff training
 Oversee all community needs that have to do with the education programs
 Analyze and make recommendations to promote successful management and
marketing of all organization’s educational outreach programs
 Become familiar with the management, proper care and history of all wildlife education
exhibits
 Be responsible for all aspects of the USDA permit renewals and upkeep of USDA
standards and compliance for wildlife education exhibits
 Renew annual education and exhibit permits with state and federal agencies.







Supervise all staff, volunteer and intern participation in education outreach programs
Prepare and deliver salary and performance reviews along with any necessary
disciplinary actions for the education outreach program participants
Provide regular coaching and counseling for all staff and volunteer education program
participants and identify their training needs
Maintain all volunteer database needs and education files and update files as needed
Administer all inquiries and complaints from the public related to our outreach
programs in a professional manner while maintaining the confidentiality of all
information
Collaborate with Executive Director to prepare monthly and annual organization’s thank
you letters and supporters’ appreciation letters
Provide general support to other staff, interact with the pubic, admit patients, and
support Center’s special projects
Community Outreach Duties
 Increase use of technology to deliver information
 Market the website and other online efforts to a wider audience and monitor the
resulting website traffic
 Manage and update organization’s website by assisting and coordinating with various
departments to share with the public valuable stories of our work using pictures and
videos
 Update wildlife advice section of SCWR’s website with current event information and
proven nuisance wildlife conflict avoidance methods
 Identify, develop and carry out new online outreach programs and opportunities, e.g.
webcams, virtual field trips, moderated chats, and new website areas
 Monitor and identify successful online efforts by similar organizations
 Promote and share SCWR stories and information with supporters and the general
public including highlighting the work of the hospital, providing updates about current
patients, stories about education animals, and information about current wildlife issues
 Be responsible for monthly newsletter development with the direction of the Executive
Director and Board of Directors
 Develop and edit brochures and be responsible for their distribution to the public
 Provide telephone support and answer calls from the general public
 Be responsible for developing and creating all annual Spring and End-of-Year Appeals
under the direction of the Executive Director and Board of Directors
 Facebook communication
 Twitter outreach
 Messenger outreach
 Solicit radio stations and news networks for publicity of all education programs
 Promote our outreach programs to schools and schedule resulting appointments
• Promote, schedule, and present on and off-site outreach programs and events for
various age groups and help to expand programs to reach additional non-school
audiences








Develop connections with Wineries
Develop relations with agricultural organizations
Assist Executive Director with mailings and producing marketing materials as needed;
assist with creating, managing and coordinating additional educational PR as needed.
Development Support Duties
 Build strong community relations to help promote the appropriate education programs
 Collaborate on ideas for creative and hands-on display materials.
 Ensure accreditation of existing education programs where applicable
 Attend trainings and workshops to stay current on the latest education program trends
and practices
 Conduct grant research and submit requests to support education outreach programs
 Prepare outreach presentations and provide training to all active staff and volunteers
and interns for various programs and events
 Provide an interface between all outreach staff, volunteers and interns
 Assist with development of education signage for all areas of the organization including
public areas
 Assist with development of new online wildlife rehabilitation classes
 Assist Executive Director with speaking engagements and written presentations as well
as donor development
