Prince George Youth Custody Services provides Secure and Open sentenced custody as well as remand and precourt detention for male and female residents in custody under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Youth Justice
contributes to public safety by promoting the development of law abiding behaviour primarily through an
integrated, multi-disciplinary approach.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Under the general direction of the Health Care Services Supervisor and with a high degree of clinical
independence participates in the coordination and delivery of Health Care to residents in custody at PGYCS.
NATURE OF WORK AND POSITION LINKS
Complete Initial Health Assessments on newly admitted youths
Provide clinical consultation and expertise to Correctional Staff and Case Management.
Admission, Mental Health Assessments, Risk Assessment for victimization, self-harm / acting out and possible
sexual / physical abuse of youths before youths are sent to living units.
Facilitate pre-clinic screening by responding to Health Service Request Forms.
Administer medications as ordered by Physicians / Psychiatrists.
Support and involvement in the Continuous Quality Improvement Plan (CQI).
Communicate with parents/guardians/community partners.
Deliver health related informational/instructional programs to staff and youths.
Teach and counsel youths regarding physical healthcare as may be required.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES / DELIVERABLES
Provides consultation and guidance, and recommendations in complex situations i.e. migrant youth, TB
contact, drug withdrawal, methadone, and diabetes after assessment of clinical issues which may be unique,
or which involve many variables, such as court dates and security concerns.
Responsible for community liaisons to provide continuation of care.
Prepare and facilitate Doctors Clinic including the processing of orders from the Centre Physician and YFPS
Psychiatrist.
Arrange referrals to community agencies and blood work as required.
Involved in problem resolution, evaluating the effectiveness of policies / services and developing new
approaches to resolve emerging or complex issues affecting the youths and staff.
Deliver immunizations.
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Responsible for medications after hours and on the weekend, as needed.

Successful completion of Level 2 OFA.
Work alone and be self-motivated.

Provide First Aid coverage and medical support for PGYCS staff, as required under WCB guidelines.
Capable of independent decision making when dealing with Emergency Response and the use of the Emergency
Medication such as IM adrenalin and Narcan.
Able to assess the need and independently initiate immunizations such as Hepatitis B, Meningitis C and flu shots per
protocol.
TOOLS / EQUIPMENT
Standard nursing / medical equipment.
Use of AED – Life pack CR Defibrillator.
Use of first aid equipment.
Use of Glucometer and manual blood pressure cuff.
Use of Oxygen tanks.
Use of the Oximeter for checking Oxygen Saturations.

Knowledge of and able to use the equipment in the Emergency Medical Bag. Maintenance of this equipment as per
Provincial policy /OFA level 2.
Must be able to use Cornet, Outlook, Excel, Word, Pharmanet/Medinet/Excellers.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team in Custody as a “stand alone” nurse.
Able to communicate with Custody and Case Management Staff about the needs of the youth.
Able to deal with aggressive, sometimes abusive youths in a professional manner.
Liaise with Youth Court Services, Sheriffs, families and guardians, and other stakeholders/community partners as may be
required.
WORK EXAMPLES
Only Nurse on site for up to 24 youths. Need to problem solve and prioritize urgent concerns, including contacting “On
Call” and after hours resources as may be required.
Monitor of youths in possible drug withdrawal and providing medical intervention and / or medications as per Protocol.
Compile and maintain Health Care Records on all residents ensuring these records meet legal requirements.
Complete Mental and Physical Health Assessments, including assessing youths for risk of self-harm.
Complete required documentation including Notice of Risk forms and make notifications as required
Provide counselling for youth in crisis.
Attend Health Services Meetings and other meetings as may be required.
Administer pre-/post testing, and teach and counsel residents regarding STI’s and HIV.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Education, related experience and registration:
 Registered or eligible for registration with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of BC (CPRNBC) or the
Registered Nurses Association of BC (RNABC) and two (2) years’ experience.
 Experience working with adolescents from diverse cultural backgrounds is preferred.
 Level 2 OFA (has to be completed upon appointment).
 Experience delivering workshops for youth
 Some mental health experience preferred.
 Current CPR-C level certification preferred.
Note: Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which is a criminal record and
criminal review checks are required.
