Particle Searched and Fragmentation Studies”.
 M.Sc (Physics), University of Punjab, 1984 to 1986.
 B.Sc degree, University of Punjab, 1982 to 1984.
3 Research activities
25 years research experience in the fields of nuclear physics (heavy ion interactions at low,
intermediate and at relativistic energy range, cosmic ray rare particle searches, pion
induced fission studies, antiproton induced fission studies), radon dosimetry, neutron
dosimetry, autoradiography and the methodology of Nuclear Track Detectors (NTDs).
 CR39 detector fabrication
- Different curing conditions were applied for its response.
- Detection characteristics were studied.
  induced fission studies
- Light to heavy target detector assemblies were prepared.
- The exposures were done at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (USA), in 2π-geometry.
- Binary fission induced by pions of energies 500, 672, 1068 and 1665 MeV in the targets of
Sn and Bi were studied.
- The fission cross-sections were determined and compared the results with the theoretical
models.
 Study of Heavy ion Interactions at Low Energy
- Light to heavy target detector assemblies were prepared.
- Binary to multiple fragments cross sections were measured.
- Kinematical analysis of the reaction products was studied and the data were compared with
the theory.
 Study of Heavy ion Interactions at Relativistic Energy
- Interactions of 960 AMeV U238 ions were studied.
- Range and mean free path in CR39 and soda lime glass detector were determined.
- Fragmentation studies of 158 A GeV Pb ions with H, CH2, CR39, Al. Cu and Pb targets.
-
Exposures of CR39 & Makrofol NTDs at the BNL, USA and HIMAC, Japan beam
Facilities.
Recently SM participated in the calibrations using relativistic beams of Fe, Si and C ions at
BNL, USA and HIMAC, Japan. SM prepared the stacks which were successfully exposed.
- Total and partial charge changing cross sections were calculated for different targets.
It was observed that the total charge changing cross sections increase with target mass and
energy; the highest cross section values were observed for Cu and Pb targets and this was
mainly due to electromagnetic dissociation; the total charge changing cross section is energy
independent for light target materials as CH2 and CR39.
Makrofol detector was calibrated for the first time and the improved calibration curves
were made for the CR39 detector to relativistic Pb, In, Fe, Si and C ions
A new method was used to determine the bulk etch rate of CR39 and Makrofol NTDs for
the calibrations of CR39 and Makrofol NTDs using 158 A GeV In49+ and Pb82+ of CERN-
SPS beams, 10, 5, 3 and 1 A GeV Fe26+ and Si14+ BNL, USA beams and also 0.41 A GeV
Fe26+ and 0.29 A GeV C12+ HIMAC, Japan beam. These calibrations are used in the search
for exotic cosmic ray particles.
 Analysis of the CR39 NTDs used in the SLIM experiment
A search for Intermediate Mass Magnetic Monopoles and Strange Quark Matter was
performed with 427 m2 of CR39 NTDs, with an average exposure time of 4.22 years,
(SLIM experiment). SM actively participated for analysis of the exposed NTDs using the
new strong etching and improved measuring methods. No survival candidate was found;
the present 90% CL upper flux limits for downgoing IMMs is 1.29 × 10-15 cm-2s-1sr-1.
 Measurement of -radioactivity of various OPERA lead plates
SM measured the -radioactivity of various lead plates using CR39 NTDs and with the
Surface Barrier Silicon Detector (SBSiD). The results of surface alpha radioactivity
confirm the lowest values for the PbCa 0.07% and 0.03% alloys, both for the colaminated
and not colaminated samples. The alpha radioactivity of PbSb 2.5% is about a factor 25
times larger than in PbCa 0.07%. SM presented the results at the OPERA technical
meeting in Goslar, Germany, 20-22 March, 2006.
4 Affiliation to professional associations
 Societá Italiana di Fisica, 2004.
 International Nuclear Track Society; 1989, 2004 & 2006.
5 Research Activities Abroad
From 1988 – 1989: Received six months training in the field of passive neutron dosimetry
at the ENEA, Bologna, Italy. SM Published “EURADOS-CENDOS Neutron Dosimetry
Background Survey, Results of a survey of background etched track neutron dosimetry”
PAS-FIBI DOSI (89) 1. ICTP research fellowship for six months was awarded to SM in
the field of medical sciences (Radiobiological Studies) and applications of nuclear track
detectors in auto-radiography of micro insects at INFN, Legnaro, Padova, Italy.
From 1996 - 2002: Several ICTP research fellowship (long and short term) awarded under
the ICTP-TRIL program (training and research in Italian Labs.) at the Department of
Physics, University of Bologna and I.N.F.N. Bologna, Italy.
There he joined a team of international scientists in a collaborative research experiment on
Magnetic Monopole Astrophysics Cosmic Ray Observatory (MACRO). He found the
optimum etching conditions for the CR-39 Nuclear track detector (NTD), one of the
MACRO detectors used in this large area underground experiment for the search of
magnetic monopoles. He also proposed a chemical etching cycle for the MACRO CR-39
nuclear track detector and developed a fast scanning system for the analysis of the
detectors area of up to 12 m2 per month. He participated actively in the searches for
magnetic monopoles (105-1012 GeV/c2) and nuclearites in the cosmic radiation using stacks
of CR39 and Makrofol nuclear track detectors.
The final flux limit is about < 1.510-16 cm-2 s-1 sr-1 for 0.0005 < < 1, which is the best
existing limit and covers a very large range of velocities. From the calibration of the
MACRO CR39 with relativistic heavy ions at the CERN SPS (experiment EMU18), total
and partial charge changing lead fragmentation cross sections on different targets were
obtained.
SLIM: Search for “light" magnetic monopoles and nuclearites in the cosmic radiation. SM
participated in the detection conditions for monopoles and nuclearites at the SLIM altitude
(Chacaltaya, Bolivia). He actively participated in the analysis of the nuclear track detectors
exposed at Chacaltaya.
