Propaganda Assignment You will present an advertisement using three of the logical fallacies we’ve discussed in class (see your handouts for reference). You will create a poster or commercial that either advertises a product or could be used to get a politician elected to office. Decide if this will be a commercial or a political advertisement o Select a classmate to run for supreme leader of this classroom OR o Pick a product you want the class to buy Review the logical fallacies we discussed in class (see handouts for faulty reasoning and emotional appeals). Handouts include: o The Play by Play Political Propaganda Analysis handout o Propaganda Techniques Notes o Propaganda – Politics to Advertising handout Create a single poster or commercial using at least three techniques to get your candidate elected or to sell your product Present the poster or commercial to the class Your audience (the rest of the class) will try to identify which technique you used. Let them know if they are correct. Be sure to write your name and the techniques you use on your finished product and attach rubric. Criteria for propaganda assignment The poster or commercial will be organized, neat, attractive make position clear and be thought provoking o o use 3 techniques – faulty reasoning and/or emotional appeal be original – must be your own work! PLAGIARISM WILL RESULT IN A ZERO FOR THE ASSIGNMENT be size/time appropriate for presentation (and turned in to Ms. Mellen for grading) o o includes visual image incorporates text/copy (words) if poster, present on overhead projector and turn in a copy that is 8.5”x11” or upload to website video should be no less than 30 seconds long, and no more than 60 seconds with copy uploaded to website or emailed to Ms. Mellen include a written explanation o a well-developed, typed paragraph (minimum)explaining what makes your poster or commercial propaganda according to the four components of propaganda (from your “What is Propaganda?” notes) o persuasive function (Of what is the audience being convinced to do or believe?) sizeable target audience (At whom is the message aimed?) representation of a specific group’s agenda (Who wants the audience to believe or do this and why?) use of faulty reasoning and/or emotional appeals (list them and explain in the next paragraph/section) a well-developed, typed paragraph (minimum) explaining the techniques used and what exactly in your work is an example of the technique and what makes it an example identify the techniques used and include definition point out what in your ad is an example of this technique and explain why it is an example (be specific about what was left out, manipulated, or charged emotionally)
