Chapter 3 test topics
As always, you are responsible for all vocabulary in the section. Your test is Wednesday 9/30/15
3.1
Be able to list the 3 major principles of the cell theory
Know how cells were discovered
Know WHO discovered cells
Know the contributions that various scientists made to the study of cells (page 71, figure 3.3)- be able to match the
scientists to their contributions
Know the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells (pg 72 in your book). Be able to write one or two
complete sentences explaining the differences. Give example organisms
3.2
you should know the function of each of the organelles listed in this section (cell membrane, nucleus, cytoskeleton,
smooth/rough ER, ribosome, golgi apparatus, lysosome, mitochondria, chloroplast, cell wall, vacuole (and large
central vacuole), centriole, vesicle). I will ask test questions on these in a variety of ways- small table, multiple choice,
true/false, fill in the blank. Study them thoroughly! You should read section 3.2 in your book for extra details.
Be sure that you understand more than just analogies - you need to know the actual function. For example, if I ask
what a lysosome is, do not simply say, "it's like lysol" or "it's the garbage man." Use those ideas to spark your
memory that lysosomes use enzymes to break down waste.
know which organelles are found only in plant cells (what's the difference between plant and animal cells?)
Be able to correctly label pictures of organelles (know what they look like)
3.3 Study your powerpoints
Know the composition of the cell membrane
Know the function of the cell membrane
***Know the structure of a phospholipid--> polar head, non polar tail (head= hydrophilic, polar, negatively
charged phosphate group + glycerol. Tail= hydrophobic, non polar, two fatty acid chains). Be able to draw
and label a diagram a phospholipid bilayer. Understand how the properties of phospholipids allow them to
function as a good, semi-permeable barrier between the cell and the outside world.***
what is meant by selective permeability?
how are chemical signals transported across the membrane?
what are receptors? ligands?
where may receptors be found?
3.4
What is passive transport?
diffusion
osmosis
concentration gradient
contrast isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic solutions and be able to describe what would happen to cell immersed in
each type of solution (describe what would happen to cell and the movement of water)
facilitated diffusion
3.5
What is active transport?
What does it mean to move against the concentration gradient?
ATP
Endocytosis/Exocytosis (how are vesicles involved?)
Phagocytosis
