The history of the development of the capital punishment at the turn of the
century in selected philosophical concepts
Summary
The paper presents the attitude of society towards capital punishment during different
historical periods and describes the development of philosophical and moral thought regarding
the death penalty. Presented terse overview of views on the death penalty in the history of
Christian thought. Furthermore, the paper details the most important arguments of the
abolitionists and discusses the traditional movement in the philosophy of capital punishment
called retentionism (rigorism). It presents basic arguments of the rigorists (supporters of the
death penalty) which are in opposition to the arguments of the abolitionists.
