COURSE AIMS
To describe the principal tissues, organs and systems of the human body with
special emphasis on those involved in movement and physical activity. By the end
of the course the student will have the necessary concepts to study the disciplines
of the degree course that requires basic knowledge of anatomy.
COURSE CONTENTS
Concepts of cytology and histology
The cell. Basic tissues: epithelium and connective. Muscle tissue: striated skeletal
and cardiac muscle tissue; smooth muscle tissue. Nerve tissue: neuron and glia.
Osteo-articular system
The spinal column. Ribs, sternum, pelvis, long bones of the limbs. General
information on articulation. Shoulder, elbow, hip and knee.
Muscle system
Muscles of the upper limb and thoracic girdle. Intercostal and diaphragm muscles,
muscles of the spinal column, abdominal muscles. Muscles of the lower limb and
pelvic girdle. Perineum muscles.
Central nervous system
Divisions of the central nervous system. Spinal marrow and spinal nerves,
encephalon trunk, cerebellum and nuclei of the cranial nervous system,
hypothalamus, basal ganglia and cerebral cortex. Somatosensitive pathways;
nociperception. Pyramidal fasciculus and other descending systems; cerebral
circuits and basal ganglia in movement control. Upper functions. The independent
nervous system.
Peripheral nervous system
Brachial plexus and main brachial plexus nerves. Lumbosacral plexus and main
nerves in the lumbosacral plexus.
Endocrine system
Neurohypophosis and adenohypophysis, thyroid and parathyroid, suprarenal.
Cardiovascular system
Systemic and pulmonary circulation. The heart and major vessels. Arteries, veins
and capillaries. The aorta and its principal branches.
Respiratory system
Pharynx, larynx, trachea. The bronchial system and lungs.
Digestive system
Mouth, oesaphagus, stomach, the small and large intestine. Liver, bile ducts and
portal circulation. Exocrine and endocrine pancreas. Brief mention of the salivary
glands.
Genitourinary system
Kidneys, ureter, bladder and urethra.
Blood, lymphatic and immune system
Blood and haemopietic system. Lymphatic circulation. Lymph nodes, spleen,
thymus.

TEACHING METHOD
The course will be mainly based on lectures in the lecture room.
