Epidemiological characteristics of the area:
Low level of MRSA, relatively low level of resistant Gram-negative rods
compared to most other European countries.
Clinical bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, serology and
hospital hygiene. All modern and conventional methods are used
except culture of mycobacteria (centralized at the State
Seruminstitute). The MD’s of the department of clinical microbiology
have 22 clinical conferences at the Rigshospital each week at ID, ICU,
Haematology-Oncology, Orthopedic Surgery, Neurosurgery,
Cardiology, Pediatrics including Cystic Fibrosis and also the
Paraplegia/Tetraplegia clinic.
The department of clinical microbiology has a 24-hr on call
microbiology service for Rigshospitalet (a junior doctor in front and a
specialist in clinical microbiology as back up) and on night call for most
of the Capital Region of Zealand (1.5 mio inhabitants).

The department of clinical microbiology
is located in two large laboratories in
separate buildings and has additional
research laboratories at the University
Institute of Immunology, international
Health and Microbiology, at the Panum
Institute across the street or via the
tunnel under the street and also has
access to the core facilities for
experimental animal research.
Staff
Clinical Microbiology: CM Specialists: 6, one adjunct professor of clinical
microbiology (at University of Århus) Niels Frimodt Møller, one professor of
bacteriology Niels Høiby, three associate professors of bacteriology Helle
Krogh Johansen, Claus Moser and parasitology Jørgen Kurtzhals (all four at
University of Copenhagen) and a specialist in virology Claus Bohn
Christiansen.

Outline of what a visitor can expect from a one day,
one week and one month visit to the department:
For one day
One day visit: discussions with academic personal, visit to the different
laboratories and information about the methods used and the clinical
microbiology work in the department including advise and recommendations
to clinicians by phone or at face-to-face conference at the clinical
departments. Receive selected articles about e.g. antibiotic policy, infection
control, research etc. which reflect the daily work.
For one week

the research groups of the department.

The nearest airport is Copenhagen (Kastrup) Airport. From there you can take the
metro to Nørreport Station and from there you can take bus line 42, 43, 150S or 185
(it will take about 5-10 min.), or you can walk from the station to Rigshospitalet (it will
take about 25-35 min.)

Chronic biofilm infection especially P. auruginosa lung infection in
cystic fibrosis including quorum sensing. Antibiotic resistance
