Course Description:
The goals of the course are are for students
to gain a basic knowledge and
understanding of:

sensitivity, and limitations of clinical
diagnostic tests).
etiology (infectious agents
responsible, differential diagnoses –
infectious or not).
epidemiology (transmission,
susceptibility, patterns).
pathogenesis (how the organisms
cause disease).
symptoms (symptoms that help in
diagnosis, how these symptoms relate
to disease).
prevention (vaccines, hand washing,

to purchase their own textbook if they would like to
keep one at home, but it is not required.
Lab Binder for this class ONLY-small is fine but I
will be collecting them for grades so it may not
contain ANY OTHER SUBJECTS!

CLASS RULES:

happen. If not, you will make excuses.
This is a college workforce course that is career
prep/student centered meaning you will do the
information gathering, lab setups, lab execution
and lab clean up.
You will be able to create a resume with various lab
skills upon completion of the course and be
overqualified for a lab technician position.
If you take care of business during class,
homework should be rare with the exception of
studying for test.

anatomy and physiology of humans.
Unit2 Bacterial Diseases of Humans: Airborne, Foodborne, Soil / Environmental bacteria, Sexually transmitted.
Unit3 Viral Diseases of Humans: General viral anatomy; Infections of respiratory tract, Skin, Blood, Lymphatic,
Gastrointestinal, Nervous systems.
Unit4 Human interactions with Pathogens; Infection & diseases; Resistance and the Immune System; serology, Immune
system disorders, Antimicrobial Drugs.
Unit5 Environmental and Applied Microbiology; Microbes in food and water; Environmental Microbiology, Industrial
Microbiology and Biotechnology
