Having one course of dental
treatment
Patient Information
The Hospital Dental Service is usually for patients
who cannot attend a private dentist due to a
medical, physical or intellectual condition or
disability.
When our clinic appointments have a space we are
able to offer one course of dental treatment to
people with a valid Community Services Card.
As part of this dental treatment you will have a
dental examination. X-rays may also be taken. The
dentist will then discuss with you the treatment
that is required and a treatment plan will be made.
There are some treatments that we are unable to
provide as part of this dental service. This includes
dental crowns, bridges, some dentures, root-fillings
on back teeth, and dental implants. The hospital
dentist will tell you if these might be appropriate
for you. You would then need to contact a private
dentist for further advice.
Once your treatment is completed you will be
discharged from the hospital dental service. We
recommend that you find a private dentist of your
own and continue to have regular dental check-ups
and routine treatment.
Dental treatment is not free. Your hospital dentist
will be able to advise you of the costs involved
once a treatment plan has been made. Your
Dental and Oral Health Service
hospital dentist may be able to give you an
estimate of the cost involved to take to Work and
Income.
If you have been offered one course of hospital
dental treatment there are conditions that apply.
• It is important to let us know if you are
unable to keep your appointment. If you do
not to attend your appointment without
telling us, we may not be able to make any
more appointments for you.
• Dental treatment appointment dates and
times will be made depending on the
availability at our clinic. We may need to
cancel your appointment if a seriously ill
patient requires it.
• Payment for dental treatment should be
made at the end of each dental
appointment. If you do not pay we may not
be able to make any more appointments for
you.
• Any outstanding money we receive from
Work and Income will be returned to them if
the dental treatment is stopped.
I need to change my appointment
