Welcome from Associate Dean King (3:04 p.m.)
A. Introduction of Tom Fellows and Nick Woodward from CLAS Academic Advising
Center (Tom Fellows/Nick Woodward)
i. Tom Fellows from CLAS Advising – 8th year working in CLAS Advising
ii. Working closely with Teacher Education/Certification students
iii. Nick is newer to CLAS Advising; also working closely with Teacher
Education/Certification students

2013-2016 Annual Summary of State MTTC Results (Caryn King)
A. Report 1
i. Cumulative MTTC passing scores for the last three years (August 13 – July 16)
ii. All test takers; does not factor out programs with few completers
iii. GVSU is consistently above the average in many content areas
iv. Note the number of completers in the areas where GVSU is not above
average
B. Report 2
i. Factors out programs with fewer than 10 test takers
ii. 23 GVSU programs are above the Michigan average; 5 that are not
C. Discussion
i. Is initial score or cumulative score that matters?
a. MDE reports best test attempt
b. Cumulative is the most telling
c. Reflective of advising students so they do not need to take the test
multiple times
d. These are the data that MDE will report to the State of Michigan on
our behalf
ii. Are there factors that we can attribute these data to?
a. Rigorous coursework/programs, astute advising, brilliant
faculty/students
iii. Annual results are not nearly as predictive as the cumulative results on how
the program is doing overall – these three year reports are a far better measure
iv. State averages in particular content areas discussed
v. It would be nice if these data could filter out data on students who have been
coached out of the Teacher Education program

A. CLAS programs that have a Response to Conditions Report due March 15, 2017
(French, German, Spanish, English, Physical Education, Math Elementary K-8)
i. Emails have been sent to affected program faculty representatives
B. COE program that . . . March 15, 2017 (Special Education Administration)
i. Similarly, email reminders have been sent to affected program faculty
representatives
C. Non-SPA programs: Electronic Report Template is available
i. CLAS Non-SPA programs include: History, Elementary Language Arts
ii. COE Non-SPA programs include: Elementary Education (graduate
endorsement), Educational Differentiation, Secondary Education (graduate
endorsement)
iii. We still need to report the data we are collecting on our students/programs
and are noting areas for program improvement reflective of these data
D. Spa-like Report Template in Qualtrics available
i. Links to the Qualtrics survey have been sent
ii. Details on the kinds of information that need to be reported on
iii. Then gathering of these data for reporting
E. History/Social Studies question
i. It may be both; please review the Qualtrics survey and follow up with
Associate Dean King
F. Non-Spa Reports are not due until May 1, 2018 and will be included with the COE
self-study submitted to CAEP in June 2018

A. Math in Action is February 25 in Allendale
i. Seeking student volunteers for three hours; free admission
ii. Keynote Speaker is Tracy Zager
iii. Dave will send information to Shawn Evans for PTEAC distribution
B. Idea on Design Thinking Certificate
i. Please pass ideas on coursework that could be considered for this potential
undergraduate certificate program
ii. Design Thinking as Creative Problem Solving
iii. Education courses would be great for this as this is the teaching/learning
cycle
iv. Considerations for a future graduate certificate program; but right now the
committee is seeking undergraduate coursework
v. Does Universal Design ever end up in this conversation?
a. It certainly could be, if framed within creative problem solving
