Genetic Disorder Research Project
Name:_______________
Date:________
Period:____
Standard(s):
 BI4. c. Students know how mutations in the DNA sequence of a gene may or may not
affect the expression of the gene or the sequence of amino acids in an encoded
protein.
 BI5. c. Students know how genetic engineering (biotechnology) is used to produce
novel biomedical and agricultural products.
 BI5. a. Students know the general structures and functions of DNA, RNA, and protein.
Objectives: SWBAT…
 explain the genetic factors that influence the way we look.
 recognize that DNA contains the genetic information that determines the way we look.
 explain the structure and function of DNA, RNA, and proteins.
 predict the physical characteristics of an organism based on its genetic make up.
 understand the general pathway by which ribosomes make proteins.
 explain the causes of gene and chromosomal mutations in multicellular organisms.
 understand how changes in DNA sequences can cause changes in the proteins that
are produced.
Introduction:
There are thousands of genetic disorders that affect humans, some of which can have
profound effects on a person's quality of life. Genetic disorders are passed from
parents to offspring in the genetic code, and in some cases, a person may be a carrier
for a disease and pass it to their children without knowing. Because genetic diseases are
usually caused by errors or mutations in the genetic code, it is extremely difficult to
cure the condition, and in most cases, doctors can only treat the symptoms.
TASK:
You have been selected by a local doctor to design a genetic disease multimedia
presentation for her office. This presentation can consist of video clips, animations,
podcasts, and other multimedia resources. She has asked that you select a genetic
disease that would present information for patient education.
Procedure:
 Assign requirements from the list below for each group member to work on.
 Complete all the requirements for your group, and make sure all of the required
information below is listed.
 Use the information you collect to create a presentation on this genetic disorder.
 Make sure to create a citations section of your project where you list any resources
used.
**Note the only thing that should be copied and pasted on your project is the pictures.

Requirements to be Completed: Each of the requirements listed below must be
completed. All group members need to contribute equally to the project, and also all
group members need to help with the citations section (Requirement # 6).
Requirement # 1: Basic Genetics Information
 Describe the structure and function of DNA.
 Explain how protein synthesis “normally” occurs.
 What are chromosomes?
 How are traits inherited from parents to offspring?
 Explain the causes of mutations.
 Explain how mutations can cause differences in the proteins produced.
 What are genetic diseases/disorders?
 List several possible causes of genetic diseases.
Requirement# 2: General Information on Your Chosen Genetic Disorder:
 What is the name of your genetic disorder?
What are the specific symptoms of our genetic disorder? Include all the major
symptoms.
 How does a person inherit the genetic disease?
 Is it dominant or recessive?
 What are the possible genotypes of the parents of individuals that have this genetic
disorder?
 If the disease is a chromosomal abnormality, describe the abnormality? (ie Trisomy
21=3 chromosome 21s)
 Include at least six appropriate images of your genetic disorder.
Requirement# 3: Genetic Disorder Inheritance/Populations Affected:
 What are the chances of a person with this disease passing the disease to their
offspring?
 How is the disorder inherited? Is it a dominant trait, a recessive trait, a problem
with the number of chromosomes or something else? Explain fully.
 How common is the disorder? How many people have it? How many get it each
year?
 Is there a certain race/ethnic group it is most common in? Is it more common in
men or women?
Requirement#4: Treatment/Diagnosis
 How is the disease diagnosed?
 What is the life expectancy of someone with the disease?
 How can the disease be treated?
 Can this disorder be cured? Explain how it can or why it cannot be cured.
Requirement#5: Living With the Genetic Disease
 What is everyday life like?
 What is the quality of life?
 What limitations does the person have?
 What are some organizations that can help a family cope with a child's disorder
(give web links or contact information)
 How possible is it that a cure will be found (latest research)?
 How is the family of a person with this disorder affected?
 What have you learned personally from researching this disorder?
Requirement#6: Works Cited
 All resources used need to be properly cited in a citations section of this project. You may
collect all of these resources in a word document or add them to a favorites folder on your
internet browser. You will be instructed on how to complete the citations sections later.
