Personality is best defined as the sum total of behaviors,
attitudes, beliefs and values that are characteristic of an
individual.
What is your personality?
Where did you get it? (why do you have those behaviors,
attitudes, beliefs and values)
NATURE
Instincts – unchanging
biologically inherited behavior
pattern
examples?
goosebumps
blushing
chills
yawning
mammalian dive
reflex
Heredity – genetic transmission
of characteristics from parent
to child
aptitude- capacity to
learn a particular skill
NURTURE
Birth Order
Parental
Characteristics

The Cultural
Environment
BELL WORK 2/18
Describe what you think would happen if a child was raised
in the wild with no parents. What would they be able to do?
What wouldn’t they be able to do?
FERAL CHILDREN
Socialization is the process through which people learn the
basic skills beliefs and behavior patterns of a society.
As we watch the video, take notes on how the socialization
(or lack thereof) affected these children
which skills did they acquire?
which skills did they not?
BELL WORK 2/23
Take out your reading about Feral Children from Wednesday
and answer the following -
What factors or social institutions do you think most shaped
your personality? Why?
FOR REVIEW
The factors sociologists look at for personality development
are as follows:
Nature- instincts, aptitude and heredity
Nurture – The cultural environment, birth order & parental
characteristics
PARENTING STYLES
Authoritarian – very strict “do as I say”
- Creates obedience, often highly successful children
- teenagers are less self-reliant, persistent, and
socially poised, and have lower self-esteem
Permissive – neglectful or disengaged
- linked to anxiety, depression, substance abuse &
poor grades
- Fosters self-reliance and independence
Authoritative – ‘democratic parenting’
- Encourages critical thinking, problem solving and
has a positive correlation with high academic
achievement?
- Tend to be more conforming than others
BIRTH ORDER
ARTICLE
Read the article you got at the beginning of class and answer
the following…
Do the examples work for you? Why or why not?
THEORIES ON SOCIALIZATION – HOW WE DEVELOP OUR
SENSE OF SELF
Tabula rasa (blank
slate)- people are
born with out a
personality and
develop one while
interacting with their
environment
Looking glass selfprocess by which we
develop an image of
ourselves based on
how we imagine we
appear to others
Role taking- we learn
to see ourselves
through the eyes of
others and act
accordingly
HOMEWORK
Read 95-98 and answer the reading focus questions at the beginning
of the chapter
what are the three theories to explain the development of self?
how does our environment affect the presentation of self?
BELL WORK 2/24
THE PRESENTATION OF SELF
Impression management- when people
make an effort to play their roles in society
well and control the impressions that the
audience receives
Quick WriteThink of a situation where you managed
your behavior according to the impressions
of others
SOCIALIZATION
Socialization is the process through which people
learn the basic skills beliefs and behavior patterns of a
society.
Through the process of socialization people develop a
sense of self or the conscious awareness that you
possess a unique identity that separates you from and
your environment from other members of society
In life one person can take on many roles.
Within those roles are expected behaviors.
When you came into school today, you took on the role of a
student.
What expectations are involved with being a student?
How did you come to know what those expected
behaviors are?
AGENTS OF
SOCIALIZATION
Family
Media
Peers
Religion
Sports
School
HOW DO DIFFERENT
AGENTS OF
SOCIALIZATION
DIFFER?
The Family
deliberate vs unintended
Usually deals with wider
society
Peer Group
Focus is the subculture of
the group rather than wider
society
The School
similar to the family but
generally more
formal/deliberate
The Mass Media
impersonal
usually the individual is an
observer and not an active
participant
IN YOUR NOTEBOOK WRITE DOWN THE
ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS:
1. Is the socialization experience the same for everyone?
2. What can make it different?
2 VIDEOS
Fat Albert
While we watch- take note of the ways in which this
show socializes children, what messages is Bill Cosby trying
to send the children who watch his show?
Socialization North Korean Style
While we watch – take note of the ways in which the
producers are supposedly trying to socialize the people of
North Korea
Think of what values, beliefs and norms are
demonstrated through this video?
Sidenote- what makes this video, if nothing else, an
incredible work in irony
DOING SOCIOLOGY

place
Explain the values, beliefs and symbols that come up
throughout your viewing
