Ciência sem Fronteiras (Science Without Borders) PhD Project Template: PI name & contact details: Department Edmond Magner [email protected] Chemical & Environmental Sciences Has project been agreed with head (or nominee) of proposed registration school? Yes Research Centre / group affiliation: Materials and Surface Science Institute Research group / centre website: www.ul.ie/mssi PI website / link to CV: www.ul.ie/mssi Brief summary of PI research / research group / centre activity (2 or 3 lines max): Immobilisation of enzymes for biocatalysis, in particular for pharmaceutical materials Development of high surface area electrode supports for biofuel cells Development of electrochemical biosensors Electrochemical properties of redox enzymes in nonaqueous solvents Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web): Targeted immobilization of enzymes The project entails the preparation of high surface area supports for enzymes using metal (gold) and carbon supports. Spatial pattering of the supports will be performed via electrochemical methods to enable the immobilisation of enzymes at a resolution of microns. Deposition of enzymes in a sequential manner will be used to prepare multi-enzyme cascades to enable the development of bioreactors. Unique selling points of PhD project in UL: The PI and collaborators in MSSI combine expertise in biochemistry, materials science and chemistry that enables the application of a strong multi-disciplinary approach to the development of bioreactors. In addition, the PI has extensive collaborations with Ruhr University Bochum (Germany), Lund University (Sweden), Malmo (Sweden), Fudan (Shanghai) and Cagliari (Italy) with students regularly undertaking research stays with these partners. Research activities are housed in a modern (5,500 m2) facility equipped with a wide range of preparation (synthesis, sputtering) and characterisation (SEM, TEM, XPS, TOF-SIMS, Raman and electrochemical facilities). The student can enrol in the multi-institutional national structured PhD programme in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
