Symposia Proposals
The Zoological Society of London, Regent’s Park, London NW1 4RY
Guidelines for submitting a symposium proposal
An essential part of ZSL’s work is to facilitate communication of information
between professional zoologists, researchers, students and the general public.
Towards this end ZSL hosts two international symposia a year.
The two-day symposia are held at the Society’s Meeting Rooms in Regent’s
Park, London. All symposia are international and usually have up to 22
speakers and 150-180 participants.
ZSL contributes £5000 towards each symposium. It is expected that organisers
identify and approach co-sponsors in order to secure a comparable external
contribution towards speaker travel and accommodation expenses.
All logistical arrangements are managed by ZSL’s Scientific Events Co-ordinator.
Symposium proposals are reviewed by a ZSL panel according to (1) Scientific
merit and (2) Potential outcomes. Criteria for proposal reviews include:
 Strength of the scientific objectives and quality of suggested speakers
 Logical structure of themes and content
 Topicality
 Relevance to ZSL research and conservation projects
 Potential to attract a broad audience including international researchers
 Potential to generate new collaborations, funding opportunities and
publications
Organisers have the option of using the symposium as the basis for an edited
book on the topic to be published in the Wiley-Blackwell/ZSL Conservation
Science and Practice book series. Book proposals are submitted separately and
are reviewed independently of Symposium proposals

6.
List of potential speakers and sessions.
List up to 22 speakers who would be invited if your proposal is accepted. As
an international meeting, the symposium programme should include both
UK and international speakers. The number of international speakers who
can be invited is dependent on budgetary restrictions.
Please use the template below to help outline the content and structure of
the proposed symposium. The format is not fixed and can be adapted to suit
the aims of the meeting.

for the future.
Are there any conflicting dates to avoid?
