PEER HELPERS:
The Peer Helper program offers a way for students to take on leadership roles, help other
students, be role models, and gain paraprofessional experience that complements academic
studies. As a successful, involved student in a leadership role, you can demonstrate how to reach
high standards of academic achievement and social responsibility. Being a Peer Helper offers a
positive, hands-on learning experience that can encourage and guide your own social, academic
and professional development.
Application period: February to March
Term of Work: September to April – 5 hours per week
Within the ISSO, there are seven unique Peer Helper roles leading a team of volunteers:

1) Public Relations & Communications: (one position)





Committee will develop and implement marketing strategies, including the design and
distribution of posters to promote all ISSO initiatives and programs.
Will staff all ISSO information booths throughout the year promoting services and
opportunities.
Will maintain the ISSO Facebook page and Twitter account, in addition to developing
other strategies for the use of new media.
Collaborate with the Exchange Program Support Peer Helper in the planning and
execution of the Exchange Fair and other Exchange related programs.
Coordinates team meetings, and ensures that all committee members are engaged and
actively participating in program development both individually and as a team.
2) Global Awareness: (one position)



Will lead the Global Awareness Committee
Will develop programs promoting global awareness throughout the Carleton University
campus, with a special focus on initiatives for International Development Week,
International Education Week and the Through a Global Lens Photography Competition.
Committee advocates for the development of global awareness and the understanding of
various cultural backgrounds in our community.



Liaise and engage student groups, organizations and other university partners in the
development of initiatives.
Will lead the Global Awareness Committee in selecting topics or areas of interest for the
committee to focus on throughout the year.
Assigns tasks, coordinates team meetings, and ensures that all committee members are
engaged and actively participating in program development both individually and as a
team.
3) Student Engagement and Events: (one position)




Will lead the Student Engagement & Events Committee to coordinate social and cultural
programs to engage the international and exchange student community at Carleton
University.
Events will be designed to support the social and cultural transition of international and
exchange students.
The committee participates in the planning process and implementation of the
International and Exchange Student Winter Orientation Program.
As the committee leader, the peer helper assigns tasks, coordinates team meetings, and
ensures that all committee members are engaged and actively participating in program
development both individually and as a team.
4) Language Programs: (one position)






Responsible for coordinating and managing all aspects of the Language Exchange Program
(LEP). This involves maintaining the LEP database and communicating with the
participants of the program at all stages of their involvement.
This Peer Helper will furthermore provide language learning and teaching resources to
assist students participating in the LEP.
Will lead the Language Programs Committee which works on engaging LEP participants
and other Carleton students through language learning initiatives. This involves
coordinating social and cultural programs around language development, including the
ISSO annual international coffee house, foreign film nights, and liaising with embassies to
participate in cultural programs.
In addition to this, this committee runs the International Spousal Language Support
Program, an English conversation group that seeks to support spouses of international
students.
Volunteers in this committee follow university policies and risk management tools in their
planning of events and develop skills in the development of programs and language
learning tools.
As the committee leader, the peer helper assigns tasks, coordinates team meetings, and
ensures that all committee members are engaged and actively participating in program
development both individually and as a team.
5) Mentoring Peer Helper: (one position)



assist with administrative tasks related to the ISSO Mentoring Program and implement
initiatives which will help international and exchange students at Carleton University
define and attain their academic and professional goals.
coordinate the schedules and meetings of the mentoring team, work with ISSO peer
helpers to promote academic and engagement activities on campus, and collaborate with
other student services offices as required to support international and exchange students.
assist in mentor training; preparation of Excel spreadsheets; and interim progress reports
and other related tasks and events as required.

ISSO Support Services Assistant (2014)




provide accurate and detailed information to international and exchange students, visiting
researchers, professors and visitors to the ISSO
provide frontline support for the reception/administrator during breaks or leave, requiring
the applicant to work independently at times.
Assist in delivering immigration, exchange, programming, and UHIP administrative
support as well as developing information services in consultation with ISSO staff.
Provide administrative support to full time ISSO staff including but not limited to
responding to emails and queries, filing, distributing promotional material and setting up
for ISSO events.

Assist ISSO staff in collecting feedback from international and exchange students
Prepare briefings and reports on international activities and events in regions where
Carleton works with international exchange partners
Collect and organize ISSO program statistics for weekly and monthly reporting.
Assist ISSO staff in responding to questions from students, mentors, peer helpers and the
university community in person, via email or on the telephone.
Conduct research to assist in the development of new services and initiatives.
Assist in the preparation of program reports and presentations.
ISSO Exchange Program Assistant (2014)

Assist ISSO staff in responding to questions from parents, students, members of the
university community, and the general public in person, via email or on the telephone.
Provide administrative support to full time Exchange Coordinator including but not
limited to responding to emails and queries, filing, distributing promotional material and
setting up for Exchange Program events.
Assist in processing exchange applications; scanning, copying and distributing
documents, and completing data entry and verification as needed.
Monitor the exchange program email account.
Assist ISSO staff in the delivery of exchange information sessions and community events.
