THE IMPACT OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS
TECHNOLOGY (ICT) IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF
YORUBA LANGUAGE
ABSTRACT
The study was on the Impact of Information and Communications Technology in the Teaching
and Learning of Yoruba Language. The study population comprised ten (10) selected secondary
schools in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, five private senior secondary schools
and five public senior secondary schools. Fifty subjects were randomly selected from the
population. However, related literatures were reviewed from textbooks, journals and past
researches. The research instruments were questionnaire which were statistically analysed with
contingency tables while the hypotheses were both tested at 0.05 level of significance using the
mean statistics. It was discovered that there was a significant relationship between Information
and Communications Technology (ICT) and the teaching and learning of Yoruba language.
Therefore, the findings revealed that Yoruba language teachers/instructors should have clear
knowledge of the concept of Information and Communications Technology and also to inculcate
Information and Communications Technology model in their pattern of instructional strategies.
This study suggested that Yoruba language instructor should take advantage of information and
communications technology in advancement of knowledge and proficiency.

INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background to the Study
Since the introduction of the global system for Mobile Communications in Nigeria, it has
brought about a rapid development in the telecommunication industry (Nwankwo 2011).
Virtually almost all industrial sectors with all labour forces regardless of environment or ethic
background cannot do without one form of information Communication Technology Gadgets
such as Global Service Mobile Telecommunication (G. S.M), Telefox, twitter. Even face book
which is the commonest usable among young ones especially tertiary students. Again, today
most Nigerians are dependent on cell-phone for daily transactions and other communication

needs. Some people appear to have developed a passion for smart phones, tablets, androids, I
pads and other modern communication gadgets.
The world technological approach has reduced the world to a global village. It may
become imperative therefore to recognize the impact of information and communications
technology and applications of modern technologies in the teaching and learning of Yoruba
Language. Thus, the interaction between new technology and pedagogical submissions have
been found to an extent to be addressing the heterogeneous needs of methodology of teaching
and learning of Yoruba language.
(htt://www.vocedu/inaugural1041eng/carnoy1004).
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) are indispensable tools in the teaching and
learning of Yoruba language. Electronic management (e-management) facilitates effective
teaching and learning of Yoruba language.
The development of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in teaching and
learning of Yoruba language as suggested by International Institute for Communication and
Development (IICD) “needs to be strengthened in order to manage and plan activity more
effectively”. Information is mostly in hard copy format and is not easily accessible.
Studies on the application of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the
teaching and learning of Yoruba language reveals major achievements; a study on the use of elearning software among future teachers in the teaching profession and leadership reveals that eheadship succeeded in promoting teaching and learning strategies to a higher degree (Moh’d et al
2009 in Soneye 2012: 14-15).
E-school management system application has been perceived by its users (Rectors,
Administrative staff and lecturers) to help create the report faster by saving the data into a digital

contents and saving the time to preparing the lecture note. Information and Communications
Technology (ICT) helps administrator to perform school duties effectively; to increase and
provide information to finger tips of administrator and build very conducive atmosphere for
work.
The global discovery of ICT aimed at minimizing learners constraints of Yoruba
language could be more pressing than ever, due to a welcome development in a rapidly changing
world of technology. The rapid growth in ICT experienced by the technologically advanced
nations of the world has done a favour on them to overcome some of the barriers faced in
teaching and learning of languages. (Soneye 2012: 5-7).
Applications of ICT to teaching and learning of Yoruba Language can make it possible
for the use of more friendly approach that will encourage young and upcoming learners to
appreciate and inculcate the beauty of Yoruba language. The efficient use of modern days
technologies will advance the teaching and learning process of Yoruba language.
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is technology that supports activities
involving the creation, storage manipulation and communication of information, together with
the related methods, management and application. In other words, ICT enables us to records,
stores, process, retrieve and transmit information. It encompasses modern technology and
technologies such as computer, telecommunication, and micro – electronics. (Abe, T. O,. and Adu,
E. T. 2007).
Education is a pre-requisite of today knowledge – based economy, the production and use
of new knowledge required a more educated population. ICT is playing a major role in the
acquisition and diffusion of knowledge which are fundamental aspects of the education process.
It is offering increasing possibilities about teaching and innovations in teaching activities through

internet has given rise to an electronics approach to the educational system called e-learning
(Adegun, O. A. 2002).

The teaching and learning of Yoruba language can be made exciting through different use of
modern technologies for communications and to establish more access to Yoruba history and Yoruba
traditional religion. The making of Yoruba language to be more compliant to inform ICT will enhance
qualitative teaching and learning for self-development (Kohler, J. 2001).

use of modern technologies for communications and to establish more access to Yoruba history
and Yoruba traditional religion. The making of Yoruba Language to be more compliant to
information and communications technology will enhance qualitative teaching and learning for
self-development. The latest key tool of teaching and learning of Yoruba Language is Opon Imo
(Tablet of Knowledge): a general purpose computer contained in a touch-screen pattern New
technologies have changed and continue to change the ways different subjects are taught and
learnt. As far as my research is concern have ever seen anywhere where the latest key tools is
effectively used except in Osun State where the present Governor of the State import the tablet of
knowledge for their schools to promote teaching and learning of Yoruba language in the State.
But for now, there is no more change as expected. A great bonus of the increasing presence of
ICT in the teaching and learning is that students are presented with ever more improving learning
in diverse ways. Though textbooks and traditional teaching clearly still have a major place in
teaching and learning but ICT has added variety of new dimension, which enables learning to be
more personal, more flexible and more interactive.
There are many desirable attributes of information and communication technology (ICT).
Each of them concerns the effective provision of information to the recipient. These include:
1.2
•
ICT in form of lesson unit of workshop for students and teachers.
•
ICT as a means of information stored and retrieved and method of doing research.
•
ICT as a channel of delivery instructions.

The basic problem of this study is to examine the relationship between Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) and teaching and learning of Yoruba Language. A lot of
researcher both in Federal, state and local government educational sector has worked, so as to
provide away that information and communication technology (ICT) will enhance qualitative
teaching and learning of Yoruba language, but their technology initiative and not bring mush
changes in the teaching and learning of Yoruba language. Now this study is to known the
relationship between information and communication technology and the difficulties
encountered in the teaching and learning of Yoruba language.
1.3
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to model a critical analysis of the impact of Information and
