Course Outline for MLT1225 — Biological Fluids Credits: Description: 2 (1/1/0) This is an introductory course for Medical Laboratory Technician students. The course is an overview of the urinary system including abnormalities and diseases. The course also covers collection, handling, storage and analysis of urine. The course also Includes study of other body fluids including cerebral spinal fluid, amniotic fluid, serous fluid, synovial fluid, sputum, semen and feces. Prerequisites: Admission to the MLT program AND MLT1115 OR MLT1114 AND MLT1113 AND Admission to the MLT program Corequisites: (None) Competencies: 1. Demonstrate standard safety practices when handling, collecting and analyzing specimens. 2. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the kidneys. 3. List handling and preservative techniques for urine, feces, spinal fluid, synovial fluid, amniotic fluid, seminal fluid and serous fluid. 4. Describe the composition of urine, feces, spinal fluid, synovial fluid, amniotic fluid, seminal fluid and serous fluid. 5. Categorize the origin of urine, feces, spinal fluid, synovial fluid, amniotic fluid, seminal fluid and serous fluid. 6. Analyze urine, feces, spinal fluid, synovial fluid, amniotic fluid, seminal fluid and serous fluid. 7. Interpret the analysis of urine, feces, spinal fluid, synovial fluid, amniotic fluid, seminal fluid and serous fluid in health and disease. 8. Evaluate quality assurance and quality control involved in urine and body fluid analysis.
