is this document for?
This document has been developed for settlement workers, primary health care workers and other social
and community agencies delivering services to refugee and asylum seeker families in the South Eastern
region of Melbourne.
What
is this document is for?
This document has been developed to assist settlement agencies, primary care and community workers to
determine the most appropriate referral service for families to access health support. It is also hoped that
it will assist the referrer in communicating effectively with the appropriate health service they are referring
to and that they may provide some advice about effectively engaging with people from refugee
backgrounds.
How
to use this document?
This document covers a range of services pertinent to the health needs of families inclusive of women and
children.

Why
has this document been developed?
There are known barriers to accessing health services including: limited access to interpreters, poor skills in
working cross culturally and with other conceptions of health, families experience difficulty in logistically
accessing service (i.e. location, time of appointment, child care), clients’ fear of service and mistrust for
service, confidentiality and mental health literacy.
Referrers can use the referral process as a time to discuss with services ways to overcome some of these
barriers.

Ward 42 Monash Medical Centre, Clayton
The Head of the Adolescent Medical Unit is Paediatrician Dr. Caroline Clarke who specialises in looking
after adolescents. Adolescents who are admitted to this ward are usually: between 13-18 years of age;
have presented to E.D. or via specialist; all reviewed by the Adolescent Medical Unit during their weekly
meeting in regard; to any psychosocial problems. They are seen by the ward social worker & reviewed by
the ward teacher who can sort out any potential schooling difficulties
via Hospital Intake, such as Emergency Department
The Family and Reproductive Rights Education Program: (FARREP) is the primary response point for people
who may have been exposed to cultural practices in their country of origin which have led to reproductive
issues

The Cradle 2 Kinder Program is an intensive ante & post natal support service providing long term family &
parenting support for a group of vulnerable young mothers, their partners & children. The Program will
