Choose a creature you are going to create and analyze (genetically)
a. Zombie
b. Superhero/villain
c. Witch/wizard
d. Fairy
e. Your own creation (make sure to make your own CREATIVE CREATURE TRAIT TABLE).
Find the CREATIVE CREATURE TRAIT TABLE for your type of creature and analyze the traits and characteristics you will be
utilizing throughout the activity. There are 6 traits. Four of them are regular dominant/recessive traits, one is incomplete
dominance (blend), and one is co-dominance. The 7th trait is the sex of your creature which is found on the sex
chromosome pair 7.
a. Each creatures genome consists of 8 chromosomes (4 pairs)
b. Diploid number =8
c. Haploid number=4
d. Last pair of chromosomes are the sex chromosomes (either XX for female or XY for male)
Complete your creature’s karyotype and explanation. Use the CREATIVE CREATURE TRAIT TABLE to complete.
Analyze your creature’s DNA: Determine complementary DNA strand for each of your creatures 6 chromosomes using the
ORIGINAL DNA template strand provided for each chromosome (do not worry about the sex chromosomes, those are predetermined)
Determine the mRNA strand using the ORIGINAL DNA template strand for each chromosome.
On each mRNA strand for each chromosome, circle each codon and fill in the appropriate corresponding amino acid chain
using the amino acid table in this packet.
Write out the polypeptide chain in the corresponding boxes.
Write in gene # (1-7) and symbol on each chromosome using the creative creature trait table.
Complete the karyotype for your IDEAL mate using the same creative character trait table.
Complete the 7 punnett squares for your Baby Creature. Complete phenotypic and genotypic ratios accordingly. Follow
the directions when choosing your baby creatures genes.
Complete the Karyotype for your baby creature using the results from your seven punnett squares.
Using your baby’s karyotype, determine the gametes for you and your ideal mate that came together to make your baby.
Complete final ZYGOTE cell (nucleus and organelles) that was created during fertilization of the parent gametes.
Part 2: Family History and Portrait (Due TBA)
****Use this helpful key below as a guide to complete the packet!!!***


Homologous pair of chromosomes
Each chromosome in the pair contains
2 genes that code for an allele for a
specific trait
Together, the two alleles make up your
GENOTYPE that determines your
PHENOTYPE for that particular trait

Chromosome 4 (sex chromosome) from Momma Creature
Chromosome 4 (sex chromosome) from Papa Creature
Female creatures should have a gene symbol X from Momma and a gene symbol X from Poppa.
Male creatures should have a gene symbol X from Momma and a gene symbol Y from Poppa.

Now draw the Karyotype of your IDEAL mate of the opposite sex (MUST be the same type of creature/species but if you
are female, XX, then your mate should be male, XY). Use the same CREATIVE CREATURE TRAIT TABLE that you used to
create yourself. That means the same gene symbols, traits, and phenotypes. The genotypes do NOT have to be the
same. Remember, you don’t want your mate to be an exact replica of yourself.
Ideal Mate’s Name: ___________________________________

Baby Making!
Complete a Punnett Square for each trait (from Creative Creature TRAIT table on page 2)

For Complete Dominance, complete #1, #2, and #3
For Incomplete Dominance or Co-Dominance, complete #3 ONLY
1. Phenotypic ratio:________;________
(Dominant: recessive phenotypes)
2.

Your Final Task!
Part 2: Family Portrait and Family History (Due April 7th)
1. Draw out your Family Photo!
All of the traits for you, your mate and your child MUST be clearly visible in your family photo.
Pick whatever scenario you want/background.
Be creative, have fun and stick to your genetics!
Guidelines:
Minimum size requirements: Full Poster (24 inches x 36 inches)
Must Include Creative Creatures names
Must be colored
Must choose one of the 10 major biomes as your background; incorporate landscape from that biome in the
background of your family portrait
 Tropical rainforest
 Temperate shrub land/chaparral
 Tropical dry forest
 Temperate deciduous forest
 Tropical savannah
 North western coniferous
 Desert
 Taiga/Boreal forest
 Temperate grasslands
 Tundra
***Must include a producer(plant), primary consumer (herbivore), secondary consumer (omnivore/carnivore), and
tertiary (omnivore/carnivore) consumer in your background (remember, they must belong to the biome you chose
earlier)…this is a food chain…they just need to be present in the background somewhere
Include copies of each Karyotype on the back of the poster
Include a brief summary of your biome
Include the names of the organisms in your food chain
Must Be Neat
This will be presented in class!
2. Type your family history!
 Provide background information on your species/creature
 Describe where your creature lives (biome/ecosystem)
 Describe the organisms (plants and animals) that are found in your creatures natural habitat (your
biome)
 The food your creature eats
 How your creatures species has evolved over time
 Important battles in your creatures history
 Be CREATIVE!
 Must be 2 pages types, DOUBLE SPACED, 1 inch margins, TIMES NEW ROMAN or ARIAL, size 12 font
