Abstract.
The environment is a very important but very fragile part of human existence and must be
well conserved. It is because of this fact that this project aimed at coming up with
environmentally friendly designs of drainage, waste management and sanitation facilities to
ensure a harmonious interaction between human activities and the environment.
The study area was the Ngong Municipal market in Ngong, Kajiado County 25Km southwest
of Nairobi Kenya.
In this study, emphasis was laid on environmental conservation and close interaction with
traders, shoppers and the market’s administration in a bid to gain first-hand information from
the people who come into contact with the market on a daily basis so as to come up with
designs and recommendations that tackle their specific needs satisfactorily.
This was achieved through research in books, online research, review of literature and
theoretical analysis of related studies, oral interviews, questionnaires, photographs and
surveys. This was done so as to clearly identify the types of wastes generated by human
activities and their possible effects on the environment.
The main problems identified included the poor solid and liquid waste management practices
in the market, as well as the poor state of drainage, sanitation and waste disposal
infrastructure.
Data collected to aid in design included; levels of the market terrain, rainfall data, the
population served by the market and consequently the amount of garbage and water
consumption in the market.
The designs done included a septic tank, a soak pit to further purify the waste water, garbage
bins with waste separation compartments to replace the sacks used currently for garbage
collection and drainage channels to ensure proper collection and control of storm water.
Recommendations were also made on how to make the market as environmentally friendly as
possible including recycling of waste and planting of trees.
