Upgrades Manufacturing Facility & Unveils New Brand Identity for its DHAgold™ Product
COLUMBIA, Md. – January 11, 2011 – Martek Biosciences Corporation (NASDAQ: MATK), DHA
omega-3 innovator and maker of the life’sDHA™ and DHAgold™ brands, announced today that it is
strengthening its focus on animal nutrition through upgrades to its manufacturing facility in Kingstree, SC
and the unveiling of a new brand identity for its DHAgold product line. At its Kingstree location, Martek
will incorporate a new product drying facility, which will help advance product quality, consistency and
packaging of DHAgold – a dried whole-cell algae product used to provide DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)
enrichment for animals. The new facility will be available for use in 2011. In addition, Martek’s new
DHAgold brand identity consists of a new logo and website (www.DHAgold.com) that further
communicate key product benefits and align DHAgold with Martek’s family of brands.

DHAgold is made from algae grown in a food cGMP (current good manufacturing practice) FDAinspected facility. Because DHAgold is from algae and not fish, it provides a vegetarian, sustainable
