Chapter 8 Practice Problems
1. Calculate the concentration of the following solutions:
a. Calculate molarity when 1.00 g of fructose (C6H12O6) is added to water to make a 100 mL
solution.
b. Calculate the % w/v when 6.30 moles of NaOH is dissolved in water to make a 100 mL
solution.
c. Calculate the % v/v when 5.0 g of ethanol (with a density of 0.789 g/mL) is added to 475
mL of water.
d. Calculate the ppm when 1.00 L of Ar gas is added to 5000. L of N2 gas.
2. Assume the solution in problem 1a is a stock solution that needs to be diluted.
a. Calculate the volume of stock solution needed to make a 0.5 L solution with a
concentration of 0.00025 M.
b. If 25 mL of the stock solution is added to 0.75 L of water, what will the new
concentration be?
3. Which of the molecules on the board will dissolve in isopropanol (CH3)2CHOH, and which will
dissolve in benzene (C6H6)?
4. Normal saline solution is 0.9% NaCl dissolved in water.
a. Convert this concentration into Molarity.
b. What will the boiling point of saline (containing 1 kg) of water be?
5. Two solutions are separated by a semipermeable membrane, a 3 M glucose solution and a 1.25
M potassium sulfate (K2SO4) solution. Which direction will water flow? Towards the glucose or
the potassium sulfate solution
