Topic Presentation
What:
Each intern will be paired with a preceptor mentor for developing their topic presentation
in their concentration area. A formal paper will be submitted and professional
presentation given.
Timeline:
Select topic during concentrationspecific rotation; complete paper by
April and presentation given in late
April/early May each year.

Topic Selection:
Pediatrics
Adult Acute Care
Both
The program coordinator will assign each intern a preceptor mentor who
practices in his/her concentration area to oversee the development and
presentation of the project. Mentors will be instructed to assist the intern in
choosing a topic of nutritional interest in the concentration area.
Concentration area topics:
Pediatrics Concentration must choose topic in at least one of the
following patient categories: chronic disease, growth faltering,
micronutrient deficiencies, pediatric overweight and obesity, critically ill
neonates, or critically ill infants and children. S1.1, S1.2
Adult Acute Care Concentration must choose topic in either
neurosurgical intensive care or burn intensive care. S2.1, S2.2
Background:
Each intern should coordinate with his/her mentor prior to the Christmas/New
Year’s break to decide the patient case and topic to present. Mentors should
encourage the intern to initiate the background data and literature collection at
this time. The intern should demonstrate appropriate goal setting to meet the
target deadline.

Meeting with Mentor: Interns are expected to set regular check-in meetings with mentor to review
progress and obtain feedback on work completed. Intern should be able to
perform a self assessment of goals set for completing the project on time.

Paper:
Each intern will develop a paper outlining the background of the problem/topic,
patient case, literature review, nutrition care process for the case, analysis of
the literature findings and recommendations for nutrition interventions for
his/her topic/nutrition problem. The paper must include:







Background
Case presentation (following case presentation format)
Discussion of physiology and nutrition problems
Review of current literature
Assessment of the case
Recommendations (interventions and monitoring) for nutrition plans
related to the case. Present actual interventions and outcome
measures if applicable.
General recommendations (interventions and monitoring) for nutrition
planning in this topic area, drawing conclusions from literature.

Time Management:
It is the responsibility of the intern to self-manage time needed to complete the
project. He/she should utilize the check-in times with the mentor to discuss
difficulties with time management and request assistance as appropriate.
Presentation:
The formal presentation of the topic will be done the last two weeks of the
internship. Each presentation should be 45 minutes long, with 15 minutes left
for questions. The presentation is formal and will be given to a group of
preceptors and lecturers and the Program Coordinator for grading and
feedback. This exercise is intended to allow the intern practice in preparing a
professional presentation to colleagues. Interns must utilize PowerPoint and
demonstrate good use of time, presentation style, PowerPoint styling as well as
professional manner and dress.

Grading:
The paper will be graded for completeness and content by the mentor and a
self-assessment completed by the intern. The formal presentation will also be
graded professionalism, content, and overall presentation style. The
presentation will be graded by all attendees and averages determined then
combined with mentor evaluation. Average of 80% total points, with no missing
sections (no ratings of a “0”) is a Pass.
