Final grades will be determined from scores on the three lecture exams, quiz average, laboratory grade, and final exam score with the breakdown as follows. Three Lecture Exams .. ......... 60% Laboratory Grade ................... 20% Quiz Average ........................ 5% Final Exam ............................ 15% Based on the numerical average, letter grades will be assigned as follows: A 90-100 B- 78, 79 D+ 65-67 A- 88, 89 C+ 75-77 D 60-64 B+ C F 85-87 70-74 < 60 B 80-84 C- 68, 69 Attendance is expected at all lectures. More than three (3) unexcused absences or excessive tardiness may result in a failing grade for the course. Attendance at scheduled exams and at laboratories is mandatory. An absence of this sort may be excused only for a certifiable, extraordinary reason and the missed exam or laboratory must be made-up at the convenience of the instructor. Students are responsible for obtaining any assignments or other material missed due to absence. Students are expected to BE PREPARED for each class. This preparedness should consist of reviewing from lecture notes material from the previous class, completing homework and/or reading assignments (with comprehension). Solutions to homework assignments, where applicable, will be posted on the designated bulletin board. Students are expected to have compared their results to the posted solutions prior to lecture. At the start of each lecture there will be the opportunity to ask questions. There will be a weekly quiz administered during the laboratory session which will cover recent lecture material. The laboratory schedule is attached. For each lab you are expected to read any assigned material, the introductory essay to each experiment (where applicable), and the details of any "techniques" to which you are referred in the experiment's introduction. Laboratory safety rules must be observed at all times. The instructor reserves the right to dismiss from the laboratory with a failing grade any student whose lack of preparation for the exercise constitutes a safety concern. Also please note that successful completion of all laboratory exercises is a requirement for achieving a passing grade in this course Students for whom the laboratory component of the course has been waived are reminded that the lecture exam average will count for 85% of the course average.
