Canine Influenza Virus WE HAVE THE VACCINE AVAILABLE A recent outbreak of Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) in Chicago, Illinois, and more recently in Dane County (Madison), Dubuque, and Jo Davies (Galena) Counties has led to Galena Square Veterinary Clinic to take extra precautions to protect your canine friend! Galena Square Veterinary Clinic has received numerous calls to our office from clients who are concerned about the dog flu and how it will affect their pet and their family. Please know that Galena Square Veterinary Clinic has always had strict protocols for all our patients to help prevent the spread of contagious diseases. With the CIV outbreak we have also adopted these additional protocols: 1. If your dog is having a respiratory issue (coughing, sneezing, nasal drainage) PLEASE leave your dog in your car – we will come out to see you. 2. Coughing dogs will not be permitted in the waiting room. If your dog cannot be seen outside please inform our staff and we will have a designated room available. 3. Our staff (Doctors and technicians) will be wearing protective clothing when seeing a respiratory canine patient so as not to spread the disease to other healthy pets. Important things to know about CIV (dog flu) 1. The CIV virus is airborne and can live for up to 12 hours on clothing, bowls, leashes, and other surfaces. The virus is easily killed by common household cleaners (Lysol, bleach, soap, etc). 2. It takes between 2-4 days for a dog to show symptoms but is most contagious BEFORE your dog is showing signs! 3. Vaccination is key to prevent infection and spread of the disease. However, your dog is not protected from CIV for at least 10 days AFTER the second booster. 4. To protect you pooch during the vaccination waiting period, keep him away from areas with a high risk of exposure such as: dog parks, kennels/boarding facilities, grooming facilities, doggy daycares, and pet friendly stores. 5. The virus is very contagious but rarely fatal. Dogs who are young, old, or whose health is compromised are most at risk for the severe form of CIV. 6. Symptoms to watch for: coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, ocular (eye) discharge, tiredness, lack of appetite, and fever. If you have questions about CIV, the vaccine, or need to schedule an appointment please call: (815) 777-2592 Thank You, Drs Beebe and Burns, and the Galena Square Veterinary Clinic Staff
