Supported by: Re-Advertisement EXPRESSION OF INTEREST Description of the Ecologically or Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) of the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem and the assessment of their vulnerabilities The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is owned by the Federal Republic of Germany and works worldwide in the fields of international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ provides viable, forward-looking solutions for political, economic, ecological and social development in a globalized world. Our corporate objective is to improve people’s lives on a sustainable basis. The 5-year project – Marine Spatial Management and Governance (MARISMA) of the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) – supports the Benguela Current Commission (BCC), its member states Angola, Namibia and South Africa, and other stakeholders and key players in the marine management sector to enable ocean development planning for an enhanced sustainable management and governance of the BCLME’s marine biodiversity and natural resources. The main focus of the project is capacity development at various levels, to implement and institutionalize Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and to identify and describe the region’s “Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas (EBSAs)”. The project requires expert support for the description of the region’s EBSAs and the assessment of their vulnerabilities. The specific work to be carried out comprises the following three major work streams: Description/revision of areas meeting the EBSA criteria Data, information and knowledge discovery and aggregation EBSA knowledge gaps identification, prioritization and action formulation Mapping of data, information and knowledge EBSA description/revision support Assessment of the vulnerabilities of areas meeting the EBSA criteria Identification and application of an EBSA vulnerability assessment (VA) method Deduction and formulation of EBSA management measures EBSA process support National and regional EBSA workshops Capacity development and data, information and knowledge management Contribution to the capacity assessment and elaboration of the capacity development strategy Data, information and knowledge management advice The service provider is requested to carry out the work through a consortium which will deliver the expert services across the three BCC member states. The service provider will collaborate closely with GIZ as well as the national and regional project partners.
