Ancient and Medieval History
From the emergence of democracy to the Crusades: explore the ancient and medieval foundations of the
modern world.
The BA Single Honours degree in
Ancient and Medieval History is a
well-established degree programme
taught by ancient historians and
medievalists from the College of Arts
and Humanities. It is designed to
examine civilisations that may appear
distant, but remain influential in our
own time. Students can discover the
continuities and change from the
emergence of Athenian democracy
to the glories of renaissance Italy;
from the expansion of the Roman
Empire to the Christian crusades of
the Middle Ages; and from the great
epics of Homer to the sublime poetry
of Dante.
Our Degrees/Courses
The worlds of the ancient Greeks
and Romans and the Middle Ages
may seem distant, but everywhere
their legacies influence in the modern
world. For example, the basic political
structures of many modern states
depend on models that evolved in
antiquity and the Middle Ages, such
as democracy developed at Athens,
the notion of Republic developed
at Rome, and the various forms of
kingdoms that took shape in the
Middle Ages.
Roman Empire; or the hybrid nature
of modern English, which reflects the
fusion of Anglo-Saxon and French
achieved under the Normans; or the
division between and West in modern
Europe that reflects the confrontation
between Western Christendom and
the Byzantine world in the Middle
Ages.
The
degree
programme
offers
a
coherent,
integrated
and
interdisciplinary examination of past
cultures. Covering over two millennia of
history across the European continent
and the Mediterranean world, a
broad range of modules consider the
political, economic, social, religious
and cultural influences that have helped
shape the modern world. It remains
a history that can be seen all around
Swansea and South Wales, from the
castles at Caerphilly, Carreg Cennen
and Pembroke, to the Roman Fortress
at Caerleon and the gold mines of
Dolaucothi.

Similarly, the basic values of the
modern world depend in large
measure on the expansion of
Christianity and its interaction with
local cultures in the Roman and
medieval periods. So too the cultural
bedrock of the modern world is rooted
in antiquity and the Middle Ages,
whether it be the similarity of modern
languages such as Spanish, French,
and Italian, all of which derive from
the Latin language that spread with the

Even the ways in which modern
Europe has interacted with the
outside world owes much to concepts
of cultural difference and imperialism
founded in, for example, the Greeks’
encounter with Persia, the Roman
conquest of the Mediterranean world,
and western Christendom’s great
contest with the Muslim world in the
Crusades. In other words, the cultural,
political, and social landscapes of the
modern world are deeply rooted in
the ancient and medieval world. The
BA in Ancient and Medieval History is
designed to explore this legacy in all
its richness.

“Studying the BA Ancient and Medieval History and completing my undergraduate
BA History dissertation felt like a huge achievement. Throughout my time at Swansea
I worked as a freelance journalist for publications, including BBC History, The
Observer and others. I also established my own magazine, The Antagonist. I’m
now working toward becoming an English tutor and my experience at Swansea
has a lot to do with that”.
