Job Description – Blind Veterans UK Job title: Transport Service Driver Reports to: Professionally accountable to: Department: Location: Last updated: Transport Service Supervisor Facilities Manager Facilities Llandudno June 2017 Job purpose To drive the Charity’s Llandudno based vehicle fleet, transporting members, other beneficiaries, visitors and staff, taking into account the welfare and safety of all passengers, to ensure the delivery of an efficient and effective transport service. Dimensions The post holder is responsible for all aspects of their own workload as assigned to them and works in cooperation with other colleagues as necessary. The post holder will use a wide range of vehicles, both manual and automatic, from estate cars, adapted people carriers and minibuses to full sized coaches (PCV qualified – coaches only). The post holder is responsible for transporting a variety of passengers locally and within the UK including members and other beneficiaries, staff and escorts with a wide range of support needs including frail passengers, wheelchair users or nervous passengers. Main accountabilities of the post 1. Carry out allocated driving duties to transport passengers, goods and equipment, to a variety of destinations taking into consideration the comfort and welfare of individuals to ensure their safe arrival at destinations. Undertake routine vehicle maintenance. 2. Plan and manage routes using suitable tools such as road maps, websites and satellite navigation systems, giving full consideration to passenger needs and comfort. 3. Escort and provide sighted guiding to members and other beneficiaries during all trips when necessary and at specific venues and appointments as well as at meal and toilet stops to ensure the comfort and safety of members. 4. Manage a cash float and company credit card to pay for accommodation, overnight subsistence and dining, In accordance with the Charity’s policies and procedures, to ensure the efficient and effective management of all trips. 5. Liaise with passengers and communicate all essential information to ensure individuals are kept fully informed of all aspects of their journey. 6. Administer first aid, as and when required, to ensure the health and safety of all passengers. Pass on any welfare issues raised during the journey to Transport Service Supervisor or Facilities Manager. Additional responsibilities 1. Attend relevant internal and external training courses, as agreed with your line manager. Comply with all aspects of the Charity’s current Health and Safety policies and procedures. 2. Undertake any reasonable tasks from time to time at the line manager’s request, as may be deemed appropriate within the scope of the post. Work context 1. The working environment will include cleaning and basic vehicle maintenance which will involve use of cleaning products and routine fluid checks (oil, coolant, screen wash etc) to ensure the vehicles are clean, tidy and fit for purpose. 2. The post holder works in accordance with a roster which includes working weekends, public holidays and working out of normal office hours when necessary. The post holder may be required to undertake overnight stays when a journey can not be completed in one day or when involved in a project which may additionally involve overnight stays. 3. The role requires considerable emotional effort as the post holder will generally be the first representative from the charity the new member meets. In addition, spending a large amount of time in a vehicle with a member often causes them to discuss personal and private matters which may be challenging for the post holder to listen to. 4. The role requires physical effort to load luggage and equipment in and out of vehicles as well as pushing and securing passengers who are wheelchair users. Autonomy and decision making When travelling with passengers in a vehicle the post holder is responsible for any decisions relating to the type of journey taken and decisions regarding the safety and comfort of the passengers. Communications Internal Reception Department to update arrival times at the centre Activities Department to liaise over the organisation and planning of trips and days out. Communication with all departments daily throughout the Llandudno Centre regarding the needs of the members. External Hotels to organise overnight accommodation. Breakdown services to arrange emergency transport or emergency fleet maintenance. Main areas of difficulty Travelling with members and other beneficiaries who have recently suffered sight loss and are often elderly and frail or suffering with other disabilities can be demanding as passengers can become confused or nervous. Looking after a group of passengers with a variety of needs can be challenging for one person to manage. Multiple collections and pickups require coordination and organisational skills. Person Specification – Blind Veterans UK Knowledge Skills Qualifications Experience Personal qualities Essential Good geographical knowledge of the whole country Desirable Good knowledge of suitable service areas for rest and meal stops Ability to drive a variety of different types of vehicle Good communication skills Good numeric skills with the ability to manage expense accounts and handle cash Computer literacy with the ability to access in house database and internet Current clean driving licence Driver CPC qualification or working towards this qualification Class D1 Experience of transporting passengers in a professional capacity Compassionate Caring Enthusiastic Approachable Flexible approach to work Ability to work alone as well as part of a team Engaging and friendly with an ability to interact easily with members and colleagues. First aid certificate or willingness to undertake first aid training Previous experience of working with visually impaired, elderly or disabled people
