Digestion of a Protein Lab Report Expectations
The following should be included in your formal lab report. Use
headings where appropriate.
1. Title page with your name(s), course code, teacher’s name and illustration(s)
2. In your own words state the purpose of the lab.
3. Answers the following pre-lab questions using complete sentences:
What happens during hydrolysis?
What kinds of molecules are formed when proteins undergo hydrolysis?
What do you expect the two protease enzymes to do?
4. In your own words and using a chart format, include a hypothesis for each of
the six test tubes. No explanation is needed to support your predictions.
5. For the Materials and Procedure, DO NOT rewrite the information from the
text book. Do include the above headings with “see Biology 11 textbook pgs.
430-431”. In addition, write a sentence or two describing any modifications
made to the lab.
6. For the observations section, create a table using the following format and be

Analysis Questions
Answer the following using full sentences
1. According to your visual observations, which test tubes showed evidence of protein
digestion?
2. According to the Biuret solution test, which test tubes showed evidence of protein
digestion?
3. At what pH did pepsin break down protein more completely?
4. At what pH did trypsin break down protein more completely?
5. Based on your results, which enzyme would be most effective in the small
intestine? Explain your answer.
6. Based on your results, which enzyme would be most effective in the stomach?
Explain your answer.
7. Were you surprised by any of your results? Why or why not?
8. Explain why it is necessary to have more than one enzyme in order to fully digest a
protein.
9. Test tubes C-2 and C-8 were types of controls. What was the purpose of each of
these tubes?
10. Why were the test tubes stored in the incubator at 37 degrees overnight?
11. Pineapples contain an enzyme that is useful in digestion. What is that enzyme and
what does it digest?
12. What is the purpose of tenderizing meat? Give two different examples. Explain
how they work.
13. How do decay organisms, such as bacteria, work to digest food? How can storing
food in the fridge help prevent this problem?
For questions 11-13 you will need to research, therefore be sure to include your references for
the answers to these questions using APA format at the end of your lab report.
