Unit 4 Practicals
For each practical write notes on the following:
 A description of how to carry it out, including how to
change the independent variable, how to measure the
dependent variable, specified values of the range and how
to control variables.
 A risk assessment
Make sure you have looked at data about each of these
practicals and where appropriate had the opportunity to:
 Identify the mean, mode and median
 Use error bars to identify how reliable the data is
 Identify outliers and the range
 Describe the data given to identify patterns
 Identify whether the data represents correlation or
causation.
Describe how to carry out a study on the ecology of a habitat to
produce valid and reliable data (including the use of quadrats and
transects to assess abundance and distribution of organisms and the
measurement of abiotic factors, eg solar energy input, climate,
topography, oxygen availability and edaphic factors).
Describe how to investigate the effects of temperature on the
development of organisms (eg seedling growth rate, brine shrimp
hatch rates).
Describe how DNA can be amplified using the polymerase chain
reaction (PCR).
Describe how gel electrophoresis can be used to separate DNA
fragments of different length.
Describe how to investigate the effect of different antibiotics on
bacteria.
