MATHEMATICS LESSON PLAN GRADE 8 TERM 2: APRIL – JUNE 2015 PROVINCE: DISTRICT: SCHOOL: TEACHER’S NAME: DATE: DURATION: 1 Hour 1. TOPIC: ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS: EXPRESSIONS(Lesson 3) EXPAND AND SIMPLIFY ALGEBRAIC 2. CONCEPTS & SKILLS TO BE ACHIEVED: By the end learners should know and be able to use commutative, associative and distributive laws for rational numbers and laws of exponents to add and subtract like terms in algebraic expressions. Grade 8 Lesson Plan: 1+4 Intervention – Term 2 ( Draft) 3. RESOURCES: DBE Workbook, and Sasol-Inzalo Workbook, textbooks. 4. PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: like and unlike terms exponents coefficients conventions 5. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF HOMEWORK (suggested time: 10 minutes) Homework provides an opportunity for teachers to track learners’ progress in the mastery of mathematics concepts and to identify the problematic areas which require immediate attention. Therefore, it is recommended that you place more focus on addressing errors from learner responses that may later become misconceptions. 6. INTRODUCTION (Suggested time: 10 Minutes) Present the activities on algebraic language to learners and ensure that every learner is taking part in the discussions. Activity (Identification and classification of like and unlike terms) (a) Which of the following pairs consist of like terms? 3 (i) -5𝑥; 𝑥 4 (ii) 13𝑏 2 ; 4𝑏 (iii) 3𝑦 2 𝑟; 3𝑦𝑟 2 (iv) 4𝑘 3 𝑦 ; 7𝑦 𝑘 4 (b) Given the expression 4𝑎2 + 5 , identify the following: (i) Variable (ii) Constant (iii) Coefficient (iv) Base NB: Engage in discussions to determine the answers activities (a) and (b). 7. LESSON PRESENTATION/DEVELOPMENT (Suggested time: 20 minutes) Teaching activities Learning activities (Learners are expected to:) Activity 1 (add OR subtract like terms) (i) 14𝑎 + 12 + 62𝑎 + 6 (ii) 4𝑚4 + 6𝑚3 + 8𝑚4 + 22 (iii) 9𝑧 3 - 7𝑧 3 (iv) 31𝑛2 + 17𝑛 − 21𝑛2 − 6𝑛 (v) 9𝑥𝑦𝑧 + 4 + 6𝑥𝑦𝑧 − 15 Grade 8 Lesson Plan: 1+4 Intervention – Term 2 (Draft) Page 2 of 3 (vi) (15𝑘 + 12𝑘) + ( 25𝑘 + 6 + 3𝑓) NB Emphasise that the way in which three or more terms are grouped when adding them does not change the answer. Do examples to demonstrate commutative and associative properties for addition of like terms Activity 2 Give this activity to learners do activity 2 2.1 Sam is 𝑥 years old and his brother is 3 times his age. Write down an expression to show their total age. (a) in 4 years’ time (b) in 𝑥 years’ time (c) in 3𝑥 years’ time 2.2 Sipho buys three different domestic animals (goat, sheep and a cow). The goat and a sheep cost (𝑎 + 𝑏) rands. The cow costs triple the amount of the goat and the sheep. Write an expression that shows the total amount that the three domestic animals cost. 8. CLASSWORK (Suggested time: 15 minutes) Carefully choose the exercises which show different cognitive levels from Sasol-Inzalo workbooks, DBE workbooks and any textbook used in your school. The following are some of the questions that can enhance understanding of algebraic expressions. Sasol-Inzalo Workbook DBE Workbook Page 113 No. 4 Page 66 no 2 Textbook 9. CONSOLIDATION/CONCLUSION & HOMEWORK (Suggested time: 5 minutes) (a) Emphasise that: an expression can have like and unlike terms. Like terms are terms that have the same variable(s) raised to the same power and constant. Only like terms can be added or subtracted (b) (Homework: Sazol-Inzalo Workbook on page 154 No 7 and DBE workbook page 66 No. 3 Grade 8 Lesson Plan: 1+4 Intervention – Term 2 (Draft) Page 3 of 3
