Biophysics of Cancer. From in vitro information to functional information
Maria Filomena Botelho
The biophysics, physics of biological functions, provides tools to address cancer at different
levels ranging from understanding molecular in vitro mechanisms in vitro involved in the
malignant transformation to the possibility of using these alterations for in vivo functional
imaging.
A longitudinal perspective of the running projects, in which a view to understanding the
mechanisms that underlie the evolution of cancer is the main stream, will be presented.
Through the in-depth knowledge of these mechanisms is possible to develop new methods for
diagnosis and treatment of solid tumors.
Nuclear medicine is a powerful tool that allows the detection with great sensitivity, through
the image, location and extent of disease. Simultaneously, the functional approach which is at
the core of nuclear medicine image is itself a powerful tool for studying mechanisms of
disease.
