POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Tribal Court Administrator the Probation Officer shall perform a
variety of probationary related duties for juvenile and adult offenders in the Yurok Tribal Court
and Wellness Court.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Prepare status reports as requested by the Tribal Court and State Court systems.
2. Attend Wellness interdisciplinary team staff meetings and Wellness Court hearings.
3. Communicate with community-based service providers to ascertain offender
compliance with court-ordered services
4. Coordinate with other jurisdictions and collaborative partner’s requests for information
regarding client compliance.
5. Implement and maintain adult and juvenile case files, court dates and meeting dates to
ensure client case management system is up to date
6. Supervise client probationary and wellness court requirements, including weekly checkins; compliance with terms thereof; and filing contempt of court actions for violation of
court orders.
7. Perform random drug testing and home visits of adult and juvenile clients
8. Coordinate programs regarding alternative sentencing, including the following areas:
employment, education, community service, retaining, etc.
9. Arrange and monitor placement of probationers in various rehabilitation and/or
treatment programs; may transport probationers and detainees in custody as needed.
10. Must work with all phases of community in confidential, non-judgmental manner.
11. Participates in meetings, in-service training, staff development, and other professional
growth activities as required or needed.
12. Perform other duties as assigned and as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



Graduation from an accredited college/university with an Associate’s Degree in criminal
justice, psychology, sociology, a behavioral science or a closely related field and four (4)
years of specialized work experience; or
Previous experience working with law enforcement, courts, probation or closely related
field.

Basic written and oral communications skills.
Knowledge of Court intervention programs.
Computer literate, including Windows, Microsoft Office (Word and Outlook) and other
common programs.
Previous experience working with tribal and/or Native American organizations.
Organizational skills.
All applicants are subject to the Tribe’s Drug and Alcohol Free Work Place Policy
including pre-employment screening.
Be able to work, on occasion, after hours and on weekends to monitor client
compliance.
Must have a state issued driver’s license and/or the ability to obtain a California or
Oregon driver’s license. Must be insurable on the Tribe’s insurance policy.
This position requires passage of a comprehensive background check.
THIS POSITION REQUIRES COMPLIANCE WITH THE INDIAN CHILD PROTECTION and
FAMILY VIOLENCE PREVENTION ACT PUBLIC LAW 101-630 ; 25 CODE of FEDERAL
REGULATIONS PART 63 - INDIAN CHILD PROTECTION and FAMILY VIOLENCE
PREVENTION; CRIME CONTROL ACT OF 1990, EMPLOYEE BACKGROUND CHECKS; and
EXECUTIVE ORDER 12968, ADJUDICATIVE GUIDELINES
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Associate’s Degree from an accredited college/university in criminal justice, psychology,
sociology, a behavioral science or a closely related field and four (4) years of specialized work
experience;
OR
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university in criminal justice, psychology,
sociology, a behavioral science or in a related field and two (2) years of specialized work
experience.
Progressively responsible work experience in a similar occupation may be substituted for the
educational requirement (two years of full time experience equals to one year of college).
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Must have the ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short
correspondence, and memos. With ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and
small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Knowledge of Yurok language is preferred but not required.
REASONING ABILITY:
Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and/or
diagram form. With ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in
standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand and
use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to sit, reach with
hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk and hear. The employee
must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
VISION REQUIREMENTS:
 Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).
 Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors).
 Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial
relationships).
 Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
