 Seniors, Please let Mrs. Croker know about your college acceptances and any scholarships you
may have been awarded.
NURSING SCHOLARSHIP - I'd like to make your students aware of a scholarship opportunity.
Nursing Schools Almanac has just launched its third annual Aspiring Nurse Scholarship. Our
website will award a $1,000 scholarship to an aspiring nurse who best demonstrates:
+ A track record of academic excellence, particularly in science and mathematics
+ A passion for the nursing profession and the overall field of healthcare
This scholarship is open to all high school seniors who plan to pursue college education in
nursing, including LPN / LVN, ADN, and BSN programs. Scholarship applications will be accepted
until midnight on June 30, 2017.
Interested students may visit www.nursingschoolsalmanac.com and click the banner on the
right-hand side of the website's homepage. Here they'll find detailed scholarship information
and the official application form.
We welcome you to include information about our scholarship competition on your school's
website. Please feel free to spread the word via social media as well.

CLUBS
 Art Club is collecting Toys for Tots. Please drop off your new and unwrapped item in the
collection box located in the Guidance Department.
ATHLETICS
 Congratulations to Brady Lester and Daniel Havens and to Mikey Cain and Wyatt Havens for
earning gold medals at the bowling Special Olympics this past Saturday. This is the first time in
Tavares High history that unified teams won gold medals.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
 On December 17th, Ms. Vineyard is need of volunteers to assist with basketball Special
Olympics here at Tavares High School as well as two other schools. You will get community
service hours. Please see Ms. Vineyard for more information.

Holy Cow Word of the Day:
After a long (600+ years) career in English, this noun has now settled into a mainly technical job,
designating (typically in legal contexts) personal, movable property. Chattel shares an intimate
history with cattle — so intimate, in fact, that they were once the same word, cattle then being
the most impressive kind of personal property that wasn't built into the ground.

1983 - In west Beirut, Lebanon, more than a dozen people were killed when a car bomb shattered a
nine-story apartment building.
1983 - The video arcade game "NFL Football" was unveiled in Chicago. It was the first video arcade
game to be licensed by the National Football League.
1984 - Iran's official news agency quoted the hijackers of a Kuwaiti jetliner parked at Tehran airport
as saying they would blow up the plane unless Kuwait released 14 imprisoned
extremists.

1989 - Israeli soldiers killed five heavily armed Arab guerrillas who crossed the border from Egypt.
The guerrillas were allegedly going to launch a terrorist attack commemorating the

1989 - East Germany's former leaders were placed under house arrest.
1992 - Russian President Boris Yeltsin kept the power to appoint Cabinet ministers, defeating a
constitutional amendment that would have put his team of reformers under the control

1998 - James P. Hoffa became the head of the Teamsters union, 23 years after his father was the
head. His father disappeared and was presumed dead.
2001 - In Germany, Afghan leaders signed a pact to create a temporary administration for postTaliban Afghanistan. Two women were included in the cabinet structure. Hamid Karzai
and his Cabinet were planned to take over power in Afghanistan on December 22.
2008 - The iTunes Music Store reached 300 million applications downloaded.
2010 - NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft became the longest-operating spacecraft ever sent to Mars.
The Odyssey entered orbit around Mars on October 23, 2001.
2014 - NASA's Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) debuted when it was launched for a four
hour test flight. It landed on target in the Pacific Ocean.
