Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Fair Deal Political Pack AS THEY SAY “ALL POLITICS IS LOCAL” AND GOVERNMENT POLICY, IN PARTICULAR HEALTH POLICY, IS INCREASINGLY TAKING PLACE AT A LOCAL LEVEL. THE COLLEGE IS KEEN TO DEVELOP THE CAPACITY OF COLLEGE DIVISIONS, AND INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS, TO INFLUENCE THE POLITICAL AGENDA IN THEIR LOCAL AREA, FOCUSING, IN PARTICULAR, ON ENGAGING WITH WESTMINSTER PARLIAMENTARIANS AND LOCAL POLITICIANS. This Fair Deal Political Pack is a set of information sheets, which can be used as practical tools for College members, service users and carers, and anyone who might want to raise Fair Deal priorities with parliamentarians. This parliamentary pack as a whole is essentially a guide to the Westminster parliament and local government, but individually the information sheets give practical advice about how to find out who to engage with, how to engage with them, what they might be able to do, and how that might be beneficial to addressing your issue. What each information sheets will tell you: 1: Why it is useful to raise your issue with a parliamentarian. 2: Why a parliamentarian might be interested in your issue. 3: How to find out which parliamentarian might be best to contact. 4: How it is best to contact the parliamentarian and what a meeting might involve. 5: What a parliamentarian might be able to do to pursue your issue. 6: Why dealing with local government politicians is useful. We consulted with psychiatrists, service users and carers, and eight key areas emerged. These became our Fair Deal priorities: Funding Discrimination and stigma Access to services Engagement with service users/carers In-patient services Availability of psychological therapies Recovery Linking mental and physical health The campaign sets out the framework for the College’s public affairs work, which will involve a programme of activity to raise awareness of our key priorities in UK parliaments, among key stakeholders, and with the general public.
