2016 Lesson Ten: Chapter 17 Northeast: Iraq
Dates: Thursday, October 27 and Friday, October 28, 2016
Day One: Thursday, October 27, 2016---EXCEPT PERIOD SEVEN--THERE IS AN ASSEMBLY!
1. Pairs: Since the class has been working with Propaganda Strategies with the Arab-Israeli
Conflict, the students will now apply their new knowledge to an example of Iranian
Revolution Propaganda.
 In this lesson plan, there are two examples.
o The first is a political button.
o The second is a propaganda poster.
 Each pair will be assigned one of the two.
 Using their Propaganda Strategies Handout and their Iran Graphic Organizer Notes, the
students are to answer the following questions.
Questions:
a) What is the message of the propaganda example? How can you tell?
b) Identify what Propaganda Strategies are being used? Explain.
c) From the Iran Graphic Organizer Notes, identify at least TWO pieces of historical information
that support the message of the propaganda example. Explain each

2. Class: The pairs will share out as a class. While the pairs do this, the other students should be
making their own notes next to each example. This is the last time for clarification questions
on Iran before moving on to Iraq.
3. Class: In the Iran-Iraq War, the United States was allied with Saddam Hussein and Iraq. The
United States believed the Islamic Theocracy of Iran and Iran’s ties to the Soviet Union made it
a greater threat in the Middle East. So the United States gave weapons, training, and money
to Saddam Hussein and Iraq to help them try to defeat Iran. While the Iran-Iraq War ended in
a stalemate, the actions of the United States helped to turn Saddam Hussein into the greater
threat and lead to the First and Second Gulf War. So who was Saddam Hussein? To introduce
Saddam Hussein, the class will watch one of the two following YouTube Clips.

 Watch a video biography on the former President of Iraq, including his rise to power, his
invasions of Iran and Kuwait, and his eventual execution.
4. Individual: The students will have the rest of the class period to begin the “Timeline
Questions: The Iraq War” using their I-PADS and going to the website
http://www.cfr.org/iraq/timeline-iraq-war/p18876.
Day Two: Friday, October 28, 2016
1. Individual: The students will have most of the class period to finish viewing the Timeline on
the Iraq War at the identified website and answer the corresponding questions.
2.
Groups: In the last ten minutes of class, the students will break into groups and review the
answers to make sure everyone has complete and correct answers.
3. Homework: Work on the End of the Middle East Unit Study Guide for the test on Thursday,
November 3, 2016 and the Take Home Short Answer due on Friday, November 4, 2016.
