Annotate your texts searching for key quotations that help to unlock meaning in
Katherine Boo’s book. Question 1 should be completed as you read the book to help you
understand and structure relationships in the text. Questions 2-4 will only make sense
after you have read the entire text. Please answer all questions on a Google doc to share
with your teacher on the first day of class. Information from these sources will be fair
game on your summer reading assessment.
1. Annawadi contains many differences of class and status. Not all poverty is equal and
not all people living in poverty are identical. Please provide a 2-3 sentence description of

3. Read the book reviews from The New York Times and the Economist. For each,
provide three themes the reviewer focuses on.
