Date Assigned: November 18th Date Due: December 3rd Name: _________________________ TURN IN WITH PROJECT Third 6-weeks Project: Annotated Timeline Instructions Directions: To complete this project you will need to create a timeline of major events that we have covered to date. Your timeline will need to include the following information: 20 events o Period 1 – to 600 B.C.E. – 1 event o Period 2 – 600 B.C.E. to 600 C.E. – 5 events o Period 3 – 600 – 1450 C.E. – 14 events Each event should have an explanation (2-3 sentence minimum) – 40 points (2 pts. each) 10 events must be illustrated - 20 points (2 pts. each) Identify and explain 4 major turning points (5-7 sentences) – 20 points (5 pts. each) o Explanations should be written directly on the timeline or on the back of the timeline NOT on a separate sheet of paper. AP level work and creativity – 20 points Your timeline can by typed or handwritten, but remember that you will be graded on your neatness. The largest paper the timeline can be on is 11 x 17. Example: WORLD WAR II TIMELINE Dropping Atomic Bomb: Aug 6 & 9, 1945 Battle of Britain: July 10-Oct 31, 1940 The Battle of Britain was the attempt of Nazi Germany to invade Great Britain. Germany tried to destroy Britain’s famous RAF (Royal Air Force) by bombing the country from mainland Europe for months. The offensive failed and Germany continued to fight on both Eastern and Western fronts without eliminating Britain from the war. 1939 1940 1941 In August 1945 the Allied Forces (carried out by the USA) dropped two atomic bombs on the island nation of Japan. Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima August 6 followed by Fat Man on Nagasaki on August 9. Within 4 months, the death totals included anywhere from 150,000-240,000 people not including those who suffered from burns, radiation sickness or other injuries from the bombs. Japan surrendered soon after the bomb, but the ethical justification of killing that many civilians is still hotly debated. 1942 1943 1944 1945 D-Day: June 6, 1944-August 1994 (TP) The Battle of Normandy lasted 3 months and changed the course of the War on the Western Front. Codenamed Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6 (D-Day) when approximately 150,000 US, British and Canadian forces landed on beaches in France’s Normandy region (controlled by Germany). It was the largest military assault by sea in history and required months of planning and deception by Allied Intelligence. The Battle of Normandy was a turning point because by August 1944 all of France had been liberated of German rule. This broke Germany’s hold on the Western front and the Atlantic and is called the “beginning of the end of war in Europe”. The loss was psychological as well as tactical because Hitler could no longer justify sending troops from France to the Eastern Front. Having to fight the war on two fronts (West in France and East in Russia) caused the German troops to become depleted and weak allowing the Allied forces to take control of the war. Germany was completely defeated by the next spring, surrendering May 8, 1945.
