COURSE DATES: Tuesdays, 7pm-10pm, May 15 – June 12 and June 26, 2007. COURSE DESCRIPTION: All films and television shows start with an intellectual property such as a book, screenplay, comic book, play, article, life story, prior show or movie. This course provides a comprehensive analysis of the deal-making process regarding the buying and selling of intellectual properties for films and television shows. The instructor will take participants from bidding, negotiating the deal, and finalizing the contract to acquiring music and other intellectual property for use in the final product. Topics include: (i) the deal: basic points regarding options, purchases and first/exclusive looks, as well as, writer agreements; (ii) music issues; and (iii) legal concerns. Tuesday, 7pm-10pm, May 15: A. B. C. D. Definition of Intellectual Property; Basic Copyright Facts; Overview of Production of Films and Television Shows; and Introduction of Option/Purchase Agreements. Tuesday, 7pm-10pm, May 22: A. Completion of Option/Purchase Agreements; and B. Explanation of First In-Class Presentation. Tuesday, 7pm-10pm, May 29: A. In-Class Presentations; and B. Review and Evaluation of In-Class Presentations. COURSE READINGS AND MATERIALS: Standard motion picture and television contracts will be supplied by the instructor and utilized for each topic. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: To promote learning and thus enhance the course, students will make two in-class presentations. Students will be graded equally on their attendance, in-class participation and in-class presentations.
