1. World War II – worldwide conflict lasting from 1939 to 1945
2. Stock market crash – occurs when the value of stocks falls quickly and deeply
3. Economic depression – a hard time in the economy when businesses, banks, and
factories close and people lose their jobs; buying and selling almost stops
4. Genocide- the planned killing of a race of people
5. Holocaust- the systematic killing of 6 million Jews by the Nazis
6. Cold War- period of distrust and misunderstanding between the Soviet Union and its
former allies in the West
7. Communist- describes a government that owns or controls most farms and businesses
8. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)- an alliance of the US, Canada, its western
European allies; formed after WWII
9. Axis Powers- a group of countries that opposed the Allied powers in World War II,
including Germany, Italy, and Japan
10. Allied Powers- a group of countries that opposed the Axis powers in World War II,
including the US, Great Britain, France, and the USSR
