National Defense University PLA China
The National Defense University People's Liberation Army (NDU PLA) is the
senior military educational establishment of the People's Republic of China (PRC). It
directly reports to the Central Military Commission (CMC) PRC.
It is committed to the joint education at national security level for the PLA and
civilian government agencies, policy consultation for strategic and defense issues and
the development of mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation between the
PLA and other armed forces through international outreach.
Mission
The NDU is tasked to prepare senior commanding, staff and research officers for
the Army, Navy and Air Force of the PLA, and to provide policy consultation to the
State Council and Central Military Commission.
History
The history of the NDU can be traced back to the Red Army Training Brigade
established by later Chairman Mao in Jingangshan Revolutiaonary Base in Jiangxi
Province in November 1927 and the Red Army University in Yanan Shanxi Province
in June 1936, which was renamed as Military & Political Academy during the War of
Resistance Against in 1937.
After the funding of the PRC, War College was established in Nanjing in 1951,
Political College in Beijing in 1951, and Logistic College in Beijing in 1952. In
December 1985, these three colleges were incorporated into the National Defense
University in Beijing.
Organization
Under the president of the NDU, there are Training Department, Political
Department, Research Department and Administrative Department.
The teaching and research are carried out by six academic departments
specializing in the studies of strategy, operational art, Marxism theories, information
warfare and command training, force development and PLA political work, logistics,
armament and technology.
Education and Training
Joint Command & Staff Course includes the Command Course and Staff Course,
both focuses on strategy and joint operations. The Command Course enrolls Sr
Col/Capt or MG/RADM. The Staff Course enrolls LTC to Sr Col. The record of
schooling for both courses is one year or 199 teaching days.
Curriculum: national security, military thinking, global strategy, military strategy,
.military technology & equipment, joint operations, command-post exercise, PLA
political work, military management and electives
National Defense Course focuses on national security strategy and defense
modernization. It enrolls MG and LTG from the three services and vice ministerial /
provincial officials from the government. The course lasts two and a half months or
54 teaching days.
Course setup includes oil-campus study, domestic field trip, international field trip and
policy research paper.
Advanced Refresher Course provides on-the-job training for SrCol, MG/RADM and
LTG/VADM. The course lasts one month or 21 teaching days.
Each course will focus on one of the following studies i.e. military strategy, joint
operations, military logistics, war mobilization and military education & training.
Course setup includes special theory study, domestic field trip and policy research
paper.
International Fellows Courses
Higher Command Course enrolls international participants at the rank of Col/Capt
or MG/RADM. The course is one year or 199 teaching days, dedicated to the study of
strategy and joint operations.
Curriculum: China's domestic and foreign policy, China's defense, military thinking,
global strategy, military strategy, modern operational level of war, exercises and
electives
Defense Studies Course enrolls international participants at the rank of Col/Capt or
MG/RADM. The course is four month or 86 teaching days, focusing on strategic
study while touching upon joint operations.
Post-graduate School enrolls Capt/LT to Sr Col/Capt of the PLA and prepares
commanding officers or research fellows with MA/PhD degree.
The school offers six resident Ph.D. programs (3 years) in military thinking and
military history, military strategic study, operational art, PLA political work and
defense economics, totally nineteen subdivided specialist courses.
The school offers fourteen resident MA programs (2.5 years) in military thinking,
military history, military strategic study, war mobilization, joint operations, service
operations, operational command, operational research, military logistics, PLA
political work, philosophy, defense economics and scientific socialism, totally
fifty-four subdivided specialist courses.
Faculty and Guest Speakers
The University has a rich pool of 388 faculty and research fellows, including 87
uniformed professors and 163 uniformed associate professors.
The guest speakers jnclude leaders of the government, PLA general headquarters and
service headquarters, and prominent scholars/experts. Foreign military leaders are
invited to speak at the University during their visits to China.
International Outreach
More than 700 militaty and civilian visitors from 33 countries visited the NDU in
2004.
14 NDU delegations including university leaders, faculty members and course
participants, totaling 404 people visited 25 countries by 2004.
134 international fellows from 80 countries graduated from the university in 2004.
Since the founding of NDU in 1985, the University has produced more than 10,000
senior professionals and has received over 800 mid-career or senior foreign officers to
participate its courses. All the theater commanders and service chiefs of the PLA are
presently graduates of NDU.
