1. How does president Luis da Silva descrie himself?
2. What does Elke Batista say about president Luis da Silva?
3. What did Luis Inacio da silva improve for his people?
Brazil’s economy in 2011 was growing at 7% while the rest of the word’s economy was stagnant. This
growth was tree times faster than the United States.
Brazil is slightly larger than the United States. It has a large amount of arable (good for crops to grow)
land. It also has an abundance of natural resources and 14% of the world’s fresh water.
Brazil has the world’s greenest economy for its size. 80% of its electricity is through hydropower. The
most sophisticated biofuels in the world.
Brazil is the largest producer of iron ore in the world. It is also a leading exporter of beef, orange juice,
tobacco, chicken and sugar. Their number one trading partner is China replacing the United States
Mining magnate Ekie Batista is interested in developing mining, transportation, gas and oil. President
Lula de Salva impresses him.
Chinese investment is helping Brazil build a super port that will accommodate the world’s largest tankers
and speed up delivery.
Brazil has a large manufacturing base, the third largest makers of airlines
Brazil needs skilled workers. Brazil has created 1.5 million jobs and close to a zero unemployment rate.
History
Corruption left Brazil broke, 200% inflation and the IMF helped Brazil recover.
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva known as Lula former metalworker, 4th grade education (60% of Brazilians only
have a fourth grade education)
He is a Labor leader with socialist tendency, businesses were worried where he would take Brazil but
now they are his greatest supporters.
Lula: “ We were a capitalist system without capital (money)”
Banks have made the most money under my leadership and so has manufacturing but the workers have
also made money.
Doing what is obvious
One obvious problem was the difference between rich and poor:
Gave the poor a $115.00 stipend per month to send their children to school and the doctors that money
took 21 million people out of poverty and into the lower middle class. Created more consumers. Tight
banking polices.
Favelas, slums, have high street crime and are a safe haven for drug gangs. The police have moved in and
cleaned up 13 of the favelas.
Brazil also faces an infrastructure problem. Infrastructures are roads, sewage pipes, water pipes, and
lines for electricity this is a partial definition.

Venezuela
Listen to the video on chapter 9 lesson 2
Caracas, Venezuela has the largest crude oil reserve in the world. It provides almost as much Crude oil to
the United States as Saudi Arabia. Gas is .12 cents a gallon. Only a few benefit from the countries wealth.
President Chavez acts like a dictator and hates the United States. He went on an arm-buying spree. He
trained a half a million civilians as a reserve force. One woman that joined said” the U.S. does what ever it
feels like and they will not be unprepared. People in the countryside support Chavez and believe he is
moving to a socialist state. 80% of the people are poor in Venezuela. President Chavez has promised to
build three bedroom homes and give away land. He has sent doctors to the countryside by making a deal
with Fidel Castro; he would sell oil at a low price in exchange for doctors. He provides government stores
that sell the basics for 50% less then the market value. He has children attending school all day with free
lunch.
